Samsung has launched the June 2025 security update for Galaxy S25 series phones. The update might seem insignificant at first, but hides an important change that may be part of the groundwork preparations for One UI 8.

The security update has first started rolling out in South Korea, but we fully expect it will expand to more regions soon. It includes the usual security patches and minor stability improvements. However, it also upgrades the bootloader version on all Galaxy S25 models — including the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25 Plus and Galaxy S25 Ultra — to version 4.

This might sound like a small modification, it essentially locks the devices into a new firmware branch, one that aligns with Samsung’s internal testing for One UI 8. That said, the update does not add any One UI 8 features at present, but it does indicate Samsung is getting near its upcoming software launch.

Samsung will base One UI 8 on Android 16 (which Google just teased) while planning its release for July together with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. This approach allows Samsung to follow its standard annual schedule for major One UI updates during mid-year.

What to expect from One UI 8

Samsung will launch One UI 8.0 as its eighth major software update, which — as is the case with software updates nowadays — will focus on incremental improvements rather than fundamental changes.

According to early hands-on reports, One UI 8 includes subtle UI modifications like encircled buttons in pop-out menus in apps such as Gallery, but otherwise looks nearly identical to One UI 7. The focus this year seems to be fine-tuning and improving consistency, rather than redesigning the experience.

One of the more notable additions is Now Brief, a Galaxy AI feature that provides personalized suggestions and reminders based on user routines. Previously limited to the Galaxy S25, this feature will now reach more devices thanks to One UI 8.

Through this update, Samsung will transfer its latest flagship features to different devices. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 phones will obtain log video recording capability through this update, which is currently only available in the Galaxy S25 series.

One UI 8 introduces the following features in addition to AI and camera improvements:
  • Quick Share file sharing becomes more accessible through its updated functionality.
  • The Samsung Internet browser receives a new interface design.
  • High-resolution display support has been improved in Samsung DeX.
  • The new calendar system features smarter tools for managing reminders and scheduling events.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 will be the first to receive the update, before it reaches the Galaxy S25 series and later on the mid-range and budget Galaxy phones.

The bootloader switch has been activated, and internal testing is complete, so Galaxy S25 users will see One UI 8 signs arrive soon.
