The iPhone 17 Pro redesign was just the start of Apple’s ambitious new approach to the iPhone. All of it is building up the iPhone 20 Pro — said to be coming out next year — and the name for that model’s biggest selling point is now here.

Say hello to Liquid Glass Display

Yep, according to a new report (translated source), Apple is considering naming the display on the iPhone 20 Pro the Liquid Glass Display. Liquid Glass is here to stay and its design philosophy is only going to keep seeping more and more into the company’s products and services.

What’s funny is that once you know what kind of display Apple is aiming to make for the iPhone 20 Pro, you might just be able to guess the name. I did, and if Apple sticks with its current naming plans then we’ll have one of the most predictable names ever heard of in the smartphone industry.

What is the iPhone 20 Pro?

Apple has a three-year plan for the iPhone. It began with the iPhone 17 Pro redesign and the introduction of the new iPhone Air last year. This year’s iPhone 18 Pro was planned to feature an under-display Face ID and a smaller Dynamic Island, though this might not come to pass due to current technological limitations.

Of course, the foldable iPhone Ultra is also coming out this year, marking Apple’s long-awaited foray into the foldable smartphone market. In addition, the company is said to be moving around the release schedule of its phones, with the base iPhone 18 and the iPhone Air 2 now coming out early next year alongside the iPhone 18e.

Lastly, the iPhone 20 Pro is supposed to celebrate 20 years of iPhone with a display that features no punch holes nor a Dynamic Island. The display will also meld into the edges of the chassis to achieve a flawless borderless look.

This is supposed to be one of the most ambitious redesigns that Apple has ever made to its flagship phones. The iPhone 19 is expected to be skipped much like the iPhone 9 was.

If the iPhone 20 Pro is perfected on time, then it will be a beautiful way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Apple’s most important creation.

A display like no other

The report also emphasized something that prior leaks have pointed out as well. This display for the iPhone 20 Pro is unlike anything that the industry has seen before. It won’t be like the curved displays that we have seen previously on phones like the Galaxy Edge series.

Apparently, if Apple’s design is perfected on time, the iPhone 20 Pro will have a meticulously crafted display with no visible borders but also no major curves on the edges. The screen will manage to provide a perfect experience like a flat display but in such a clever way that the borders will be completely invisible.

This will be achieved by designing the edges of the display to only slightly meld into the chassis, enough to make the borders disappear but not enough to make the contents of the screen bend too.

I really want this phone to succeed

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it a million times, popularizing the notch was one of Apple’s worst sins in my eyes. The iPhone 20 Pro is the company’s way of redeeming itself and hopefully kickstarting a new trend across the smartphone industry.

And if the iPhone 20 Pro comes to pass as Apple is hoping for it to, then I might just finally be making the switch to team iPhone.
