I have the 12R OnePlus also. But have a Poetic Revolution case $18.99 that comes with a screen shield protector built into the case . Each Poetic case I've bought lasts me 5+ years. Still have one on my 2019 OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren. I've never bout insurance. Never needed it . Cheers
Flexible plastic screen protectors were a chore to apply, usually ended up with air bubbles no matter how careful you were, and offered questionable protection to boot. (Only time I've ever broken a phone screen was when I dropped my Galaxy S4 face-down onto the ceramic edge of a toilet bowl. All the screen protector did was ensure that the dozens of glass shards stayed in place underneath it, instead of being scattered all over the bathroom floor.)
Starting on my Note 8, though, and with the two phones since, I've been using solid, supposedly-"glass" (I assume they're plastic) screen protectors. They go on much more easily with no air bubbles, and they do seem to offer to some protection. At least, I've had a couple of close calls that resulted in the *protector* being cracked and needing replacement. (Fortunately, they come in multi-packs.)
Can I prove that, without the protector, those cracks would've been in the screen instead? No. But for the few bucks they cost, I'm not willing to take that chance.

I'm using Spigen EZ Fit GLAS.tR - super easy to apply, no bubbles with the tool included and the protection is top notch.
