Google working on fix for recent Play Store bug affecting app updates
The latest update to the Google Play Store app may have brought a number of new features, but apparently, it also introduced a not-so-minor glitch affecting app updates. Because of this bug, users receive an error message when downloading or updating specific applications. We experienced it too several days ago.

The bad news is that there's nothing that can be done at this time to resolve this issue. The good news, however, is that Google has acknowledged the glitch and it is working on a solution. Here's an official statement posted on the company's support page:

[#10230007] “Package File Invalid” error when downloading or updating apps

We’ve received reports that some users are getting "Package File Invalid" while trying to download or update apps.

We’re currently investigating a permanent solution, and there are no workarounds at this time.

We’ll continue to update this page with developments, so check back soon.

Issue first reported on: August 7, 2013

Last updated on: August 13, 2013

So sit back tight, guys! The issue is to be resolved, hopefully in the near future. In the meantime, let us know if you've found a workaround for the glitch.

Randomly had that, was driving me nuts, especially after downloading huge games. Seems to have gone away this past couple of days.

That happened few weeks ago. What do you expect, discounted apps for a year once that happened?

This has been happening on my N7 for two weeks now. Apps have been outdated since I updated to 4.3. Never had this problem on my GS3 though...

Didn't even know there was a bug affecting updates. Haven't had any issues. Anyone know if this is limited to certain apps or regions?

Yes. I'm in the USA and two of my apps failed to update and another failed to install. But I tried installing another app and it worked fine. So it seems to only have a problem with certain apps. That's why I thought it was an issue with the apps themselves (developer side).

i had this problem after getting my my 4,3 update OTA. I know why it was happening and i know how to fix it. It started happening after the update because i was using 'the trick' to try and push my update through quicker: Settings> apps> all apps> Google services framework> Clear data.

To fix this problem, simply remove your google account from the device then re-add it. No problems with playstore or any other google apps since.

There is a work around, just not a great one. It's only affecting some internet services. I can update all apps over verizon 4g, but not over my Charter cable modem. So I have to update my tablet over hotspot for it to work for all my apps.

There is one 100%-working workaround for this.

Download an App called "Hideman VPN" on Play Store. If you get the same error while trying to download it, google it and download it elsewhere. Then install it.

Once installed, open the App, and connect to the country where you're in. Once connected, update your Apps again on Play Store. You can then disconnect again.
