At WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2026, there was an unexpected face in the crowd. What makes this occurrence more notable is the fact that said employee had just stepped down from his role at Apple this April.

John Giannandrea’s time at Apple

In 2018, Apple CEO Tim Cook hired John Giannandrea, a former Google employee who had risen to the position of chief of search and artificial intelligence at the search giant. Giannandrea’s role was simple on paper: make Siri a competent digital assistant once more.

As modern AI models exploded in popularity, Giannandrea was tasked with making sure that Siri could compete with rival models like ChatGPT and Gemini. After years of slow progress, John Giannandrea exited Apple earlier this year.

He was present for WWDC

WWDC 2026 was all about the rebranded Siri AI. Apple has finally caught up to the competition, mostly thanks to Google’s Gemini.

Interestingly, Giannandrea was spotted in the crowd at Apple’s exclusive in-person event for WWDC. The former chief of AI for Apple was present to witness Siri become what it could not under his leadership.

Giannandrea isn’t to blame

As industry insider Mark Gurman has pointed out before, the Apple Intelligence fiasco wasn’t necessarily Giannandrea’s fault. The top brass at Apple was resistant to modern AI for way too long and upper management is run like a small family business where outsiders are rarely able to influence change.

However, as expected, people were quick to poke fun at Giannandrea’s presence at WWDC. Comments were made about how Giannandrea was seeing the Siri he had failed to make for years and that he looked quite put off with the whole situation.

I think it was a nice gesture

The photo of Giannandrea is a single image taken at an unflattering time. In my opinion, there was no animosity on display here.

Sometimes, a particular employee just doesn’t gel with a company, no matter how gifted and talented they might be. Giannandrea was that employee for Apple, and I think that it’s a sweet gesture on the company’s part to let him see Siri evolve and to be a part of Tim Cook’s last presentation as CEO.
