Whatever Google reveals at The Android Show, it won't be this
The Android boss confirmed the one rumor fans were dreading isn't happening.
Google has a big Android event lined up for May 12, and a teaser video from Android boss Sameer Samat had fans bracing for the worst: an Apple-style Liquid Glass makeover. Thankfully, Samat himself shut that down before the panic could spread.
What Samat actually said
In a 15-second teaser posted to X, the Bugdroid mascot pulls a light switch and suddenly turns glass-like and translucent. You can probably guess what happened next.
The replies filled up with worried Android fans convinced Google was about to copy Apple's controversial iOS 26 redesign. Samat responded directly to a couple of them, confirming that an Apple-inspired overhaul is "not happening!"
Fellow Googler Mishaal Rahman echoed the same message, which should put the rumor to bed. Whatever Google is teasing for The Android Show on May 12, it isn't a Liquid Glass clone.
Biggest. Android. Updates. Ever.

Why this matters more than it should
Google rolled out Material 3 Expressive last year, and it was a refreshing direction for Android. New animations, refreshed icons, bolder typography, and a fully customizable quick settings menu that I actually use daily on my Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
The problem is that almost every other Android maker has already jumped ship to chase Liquid Glass. Samsung's One UI 8.5 is borrowing heavily from iOS 26, Realme launched its Light Glass Design, and Vivo's OriginOS 6 looks suspiciously familiar too. We even called this exact identity crisis out a few months back, when Android phones started adopting Liquid Glass without their owners' consent.
So when fans saw a glass-themed teaser from Google itself, the panic made sense. That tells you everything about where Android's identity sits right now.
The Android Show
I'm relieved Google held the line, because Liquid Glass has been a mess of its own, and the last thing Android needs is to inherit those problems while abandoning its own distinct look.
Fortunately, we won't have to wait long to see the direction that Android will be going in. The subject of the same X post that started this conversation (The Android Show) will be here on May 12th at 10am PT to hopefully give us a sneak peek.
What I actually want from May 12
I'm all for Android matching iOS feature for feature where it makes sense, but I do not want Android to become an iOS clone. The whole reason I keep coming back to Pixel is that it feels different on purpose, and Material 3 Expressive deserves room to breathe before Google jumps to the next thing.
If May 12 brings more polish on what Google already started, that's a win for everyone still rooting for Android to be Android.
