Neither the Apple Watch Series 12 nor the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to bring any fundamental upgrades this year, but Apple may still have something special prepared for its smartwatch. A new rumor claims the base model could revive a finish we haven’t seen in quite a while.
Apple could revive the ceramic Apple Watch casing
Apple is expected to introduce modest hardware updates to the Apple Watch Series 12, but there could be a more significant change on the exterior. Leaker and collector Kosutami posted on X that the Series 12 will bring back the ceramic casing we’ve seen years ago.
This is not the first time we’re hearing about the potential return of the ceramic Apple Watch. Apple insider Mark Gurman said earlier this month that the company was plotting the return of this casing option either this year or next.

Apple first launched a ceramic smartwatch a decade ago with the Apple Watch Series 2 Edition. This was the luxurious model of 2016, which started at $1,249. A year later, the company launched a black version of the same material with the Series 3 models.
Following a brief pause, the ceramic casing briefly returned with the Apple Watch Series 5, which arrived in 2019. Just like its predecessors with the same finish, this was the luxurious watch of the year, starting at $1,299 for the 40 mm model and $1,349 for the 44 mm version.

After this, the ceramic finish was discontinued, and the Hermès edition models remained the only luxurious options, which are made of the so-called silver titanium on the Apple Watch Series 11. It is not clear whether the return of the ceramic casing will be part of the Hermès models or the return of the Edition versions of the watch.
This could be the main concern for Apple Watch users when they think about the ceramic finish. On Reddit, users generally expect it to come at a higher price, which appears to be putting many people off it.

This could be a bad moment to buy an Apple Watch
While Apple is not expected to introduce major changes this year, the Apple Watch Series 13 could be very different. A recent rumor suggested that next year’s watches may come with a new band system.
Such change could make existing bands useless, which will certainly anger Apple Watch users. However, similar rumors have been running for years, so there’s a big chance nothing like this happens anytime soon.
Perfect fit for the more expensive phones
I would certainly skip a luxurious smartwatch, but I can imagine people who pay about $2,000 for a foldable iPhone Ultra pairing it with a fancy Apple Watch. After the inevitable price hike, even the iPhone 18 Pro Max could be a good fit for such a wearable.
