Samsung's huge Galaxy S27 Ultra mistake won't be lamented until it's very late

Despite the Exynos 2700 reportedly edging out its Snapdragon counterpart across all categories, the S27 Ultra won't get it.

Despite recent rumors claiming otherwise, it looks like the Galaxy S27 Ultra won't use the proprietary Exynos 2700 chipset in any market. That's no reason to rejoice.

Sticking with Snapdragon.

The South Korean leaker Lanzuk, also known as yeux1122, claims that while the Exynos 2700 yield is good and production is expected to increase by 8% to 11%, no stock has been earmarked for the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

The standard, Plus, and Pro models will likely use a mix of the Exynos 2700 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, depending on the market.

Exynos 2700 might be the fastest chip this time around

By exclusively equipping all Ultra models released since 2022 with Snapdragon chips, Samsung lends weight to the narrative that in-house chips are inferior. However, Exynos has slowly been closing the performance gaps with Snapdragon chips, and this year, it may claim the lead.

According to a die shot shared by @SemiAnalysis_, the Exynos 2700 is a deca-core chipset featuring a prime C2 Ultra core running at 4.24 GHz, a secondary C2 Ultra core clocked at 3.36 GHz, four C2 Pro cores reaching 3.74 GHz, and four C2 cores running at 2.88 GHz. The chip will be built on Samsung's 2nm process.

In contrast, the 2nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 features two big cores running at up to 5 GHz and six performance cores clocked at 4 GHz.

Despite the slower clock speeds, Samsung's silicon might outperform its Qualcomm rival across all categories.

Faster and cooler

According to Korean publications, the Exynos 2700 has logged 9.5% faster CPU speeds, 5% higher GPU peak output, superior on-device AI processing, and 12.7% greater power efficiency.

Apparently, Samsung will take a similar approach to Apple, placing the memory alongside the Exynos 2700 instead of on top. This should allow for better heat dissipation.

The emphasis on keeping the chip cool is important, considering that the otherwise speedy Exynos 2600 lost out to rival chips due to poor thermals.

Exynos 2700 needs to step up

The Galaxy S26 lineup recently saw a hike of $100 or more. While the RAM shortage is mostly to blame for that, shifting to an in-house chipset could help Samsung offset some of those costs. After all, chips sourced from Qualcomm and MediaTek accounted for 17.9% of the total raw material costs for consumer electronics produced by Samsung in the first half of the year.
