T-Mobile hints that your iPhone 18 Pro Max color matters more than you might think

The new iPhone 18 Pro Max is still making ripples from the big September 9 splash when it was announced by John Ternus and not Tim Cook who stepped down from his iconic CEO role.

Everybody's focused on what the phone is like in terms of battery life, camera capabilities or raw power performance, but there's something else that matters, too. The phone's color itself.

What the experts say

There's a new T-Mobile blog post titled "What Your iPhone 18 Pro Color Choice Says About You". In it, the telco giant talks to color theorist Marcie Cooperman, an assistant professor at Parsons School of Design and author of the textbook Color: How to Use It.

And, as the article has it, the color one chooses for their new iPhone can "reveal a surprising amount" about their personality.

Colors and feelings

According to Cooperman, color triggers an emotional response almost immediately. That's particularly interesting with smartphones because they're objects we carry around and look at countless times every day. A phone's finish can influence how we see both the device and its owner.

Different colors can evoke different reactions. Red, for example, tends to be associated with energy, excitement and passion, while blue is generally linked with calmness. That makes a bold phone color more than just a cosmetic choice for someone who wants their device to stand out.

Burgundy, one of the new color options this year, falls into that category. It's still rooted in red, so it carries some of the same emotional associations. Cooperman's explanation is that people who choose a strong red-based shade may be more comfortable using their phone as a form of personal expression.

Then there are the safer choices. Black and other neutral finishes don't necessarily attract attention, but that's part of their appeal. They tend to look polished, understated and easy to match with practically anything. Someone picking a neutral phone may simply prefer something elegant that doesn't make quite as loud a statement about who they are.

Trends and fashion

There's also the question of fashion. Phone colors can follow broader design trends, particularly among younger buyers, but those trends can have remarkably short shelf lives. Rose gold is a good example: it became almost synonymous with the mid-2010s and even appeared as an iPhone finish, only for the color to eventually lose much of its novelty.

Of course, none of this means you can determine someone's personality simply by looking at their phone.

Orange phone good

I, personally, don't care that much what color my phone is, as long as it's black. I've had green, silver, blue, orange, red and white phones—and probably many more hues that I can't remember—but a phone's color isn't a big factor when it's time to draw my wallet.

I could be a minority here, since we saw what happened last year (and in 2026, too) with the orange colored iPhone 17 Pro Max. This color option was a major hit and got other brands (like Oppo and its Find X9 Ultra) to consider the orange hue as well.
