At long last, Apple is giving Siri a capability that it first showed off back in 2024 at WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference). Using the App Intents framework, Siri will be able to interact with apps on your iPhone via a simple verbal prompt while also being able to carry out complex tasks across various apps.
However, when you can expect this functionality to roll out in a public release of iOS is still unclear. Apple insider Mark Gurman, in his newsletter Power On, shed more light on when Apple users can expect their Siri to finally be able to carry out complicated operations across their apps.

According to Gurman, Apple’s recent announcements hint at Siri picking up the ability to interact more deeply with the company’s first-party apps as early as next month. In the iOS 27.3 Beta out now, Siri is already able to carry out certain tasks across a few first-party apps.
Users can actually ask Siri what it can do within each app. Gurman presents a few use cases for Siri’s new features:
Organizing tabs in the Safari browser
Sorting through folders in the Files app
Unsending or text editing in iMessage
Editing a photo and then sharing it automatically
We can expect Siri to become a lot more capable if Apple brings this feature to more of its first-party apps in a public release in December. For most of the company’s user base, that would be their first exposure to a Siri that is capable of interacting with iOS like how Apple showed it to be in 2024.

Siri AI on third-party apps

Imagine if you could just tell Siri to order an Uber to your friend’s house, place an order for a pizza to be delivered to said friend’s house, and send them a message on WhatsApp to let them know you and a pizza are on their way. When Siri finally gets support for integration with third-party apps, you won’t have to imagine such a scenario.
However, according to Gurman, Apple is unlikely to roll out this functionality anytime soon. The company will most likely bring App Intents for third-party apps in a public release shortly before WWDC 2027 in June.
However, allowing Siri to carry out certain tasks on third-party apps is only the beginning. Apple has grand plans for Siri AI and CEO John Ternus wants them executed as soon as possible.
Apple wants an agentic Siri for your iPhone

Rival companies have already rolled out agentic AI, AI that is able to take over extremely complicated tasks and do them itself without the need for supervision or continued prompts. OpenAI, Meta, and SpaceXSI all fulfill that need while Apple’s Siri is only just catching up on basic integration with apps.
Gurman claims that while John Ternus presented a very positive view publicly, insisting that Apple needs to approach AI more responsibly than its competitors, the CEO is different behind closed doors.
Apparently, John Ternus recently had a conversation with Craig Federighi — Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at Apple — about Siri AI. Ternus is reportedly concerned that Apple is not approaching AI with the same urgency as competitors.
The CEO allegedly told Federighi to accelerate work on bringing Siri up to speed. Ternus apparently wishes for Siri to actually get groundbreaking updates, not just necessary tweaks to deliver what Apple promised over two years ago.
While I’d love to see that happen, I would aim small for now if I was Ternus. Siri is still a very incompetent digital assistant according to many Apple users and could really do with those aforementioned necessary tweaks.

Also, before making Siri into an AI agent, perhaps Apple could fix some other glaring iOS issues first? Like, maybe improving the keyboard or finally introducing a universal back gesture or button?
