Siri AI is finally gaining a feature that Apple has been hinting at since WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) 2024. With the iOS 27.3 Beta, Siri is now finally able to interface with third-party apps to a great degree, a capability that Apple is now letting developers play around with at last.

Siri will be able to interact with your apps

Though interfacing with Apple’s own first-party apps had improved drastically, Siri was still very limited in what it could do with third-party software on your iPhone. With the Beta, developers can now let Siri interact with their apps and carry out complex tasks with just a simple verbal prompt from the user.

Siri can now look inside your apps and understand data, fetch something that you’ve asked for, and even make changes to any data in a third-party app. In short, it’s now much more capable of being a true smart digital assistant like Apple had shown it off to be over two years ago.

Another step closer to Apple Intelligence

It’s no secret that Apple has been lagging behind its rivals in the AI department. Even now, the only way Apple was able to catch up to some extent is because the company let Google’s Gemini model handle Siri while research on its own models continues.

What Apple promised in 2024, what it cleverly named Apple Intelligence (because it can also be shortened to AI), is still incomplete. In Apple’s notes about iOS 27.3, the company says that Siri AI is “profoundly more capable” over the older Siri, and integration with third-party apps will ensure that this remains true.

Once iOS 27.3 gets a public release, Apple’s customer base will get a much more capable version of Siri. Combined with what Siri AI can already do thanks to Google’s help, the AI experience on Apple devices is almost equivalent to what can be found on rival offerings. Though, unfortunately, for many users that’s not really saying much.

But, ultimately, this is just a step closer to Apple’s end goal, placating its user base until it can offer its AI services running on its own models. I hope that those models are smarter than today’s Siri, though. For Apple’s own sake if nothing else.
