Everyone is well aware that the demand from AI data centers is driving memory prices up, which is affecting the prices of everything from laptops to smartphones. However, many consumers have hoped that would be a temporary issue that would get resolved sooner rather than later, but according to Samsung, that might not be the case.
The end of the RAM shortage is nowhere near
During its Q1 earnings call, Samsung predicted that the extreme memory shortage won’t end in 2027. Even worse, according to a Reuters report, the company says the issue could get significantly worse than it is now.
Our supply falls far short of customer demand. Based solely on the demand currently received for 2027, the supply-to-demand gap for 2027 is set to widen even further than in 2026.

The reason for this grim prediction is that AI technology development is continuing, which Samsung predicts will lead to sustained demand growth. Meanwhile, the supply of memory chips will remain constrained for the foreseeable future because building new factories takes a long time.
Would you pay more for your next smartphone than your current one?
It could get even worse, quickly
That’s far from the first worrisome prediction about RAM prices. We’ve already heard forecasts that the shortages could continue until 2030, leading to even higher prices.

Samsung is facing a more immediate threat to its chip production if it doesn’t reach an agreement with its labor union. There’s an 18-day strike planned to start on May 21, which would exacerbate the Korean company’s shortages.
Is there a limit
We’re already seeing the effect of the memory shortages on smartphone prices. Samsung’s Galaxy A37 and Galaxy A57 came with noticeable price increases despite the rather minor upgrades over last year’s models.
Motorola also launched its Razr (2026) series with small improvements and higher prices. Other brands have increased the prices of already existing models, and there’s a chance we haven’t even seen the worst of the price hikes.
Maybe go upgrade your gadgets
This may be the best time to buy a new phone, tablet, gaming console, or almost any other type of consumer gadget. I was always a fan of waiting for seasonal discounts unless getting a new device was an emergency, but those are probably not happening anytime soon.
