Samsung's next item tracker appears to be changing shape. A new report says the Galaxy SmartTag 3 adopts a squircle design that matches the One UI icons on your Galaxy S26 Ultra and the case on the Galaxy Watch 9. The leaked diagram also shows no built-in lanyard hole, so clipping it to your keys would likely mean buying a case first.

The claim comes from a new report published this week as a leak and not as confirmed by Samsung.

The diagram shows a squircle body, which is the rounded-square shape Samsung has been putting on nearly everything lately, plus a physical button back in the center for the first time since the original SmartTag in 2021. Pressing it would likely ping your phone, and it could also trigger a Modes and Routines automation, which is the shortcut system that changes your phone's settings on a cue.
What the diagram does not show is a lanyard hole, and both earlier SmartTags had one built into the body. Without it, you would need a separate case or keyring accessory before the tracker can attach to anything at all.

Why Samsung wants everything to look the same
Samsung has spent the past couple of years pushing one shape across the Galaxy lineup. The One UI icons use it, the Galaxy Watch 8 introduced the squircle case and the Watch 9 kept it this year. A tracker cut from the same outline fits that plan, and on a product page it will look like it belongs.

The awkward part is that the SmartTag 2 was designed the other way around. Samsung built it as a ring with a metal loop through the middle, specifically so it could carry keyrings and clips straight out of the box, and that loop was the main design change at the time.
If you use an AirTag, none of this will feel new, since Apple has never put a hole in one and is happy to sell you a loop for it. Galaxy owners are the only ones affected here since the tracker stays inside Samsung's own network.
Who ends up paying for the new shape
This mostly matters to people who buy trackers in twos and threes, one for keys, one for a bag, and one for a pet collar.
The rest of the hardware appears to carry over, so the report expects Bluetooth and UWB (ultra-wideband) along with Samsung Find integration and an IP67 or IP68 rating for dust and water. There is also talk of a move to Bluetooth 6.0, though that part is speculation for now.
Where I hope Samsung stops short
I like the squircle. It looks good on the Watch 9, and it does make the Galaxy hardware feel like one family. But a tracker is not a watch, and its entire job is to hang off something you might lose.
There is an easy fix here, of course, and Samsung could just put a keyring in the box the way it already bundles accessories elsewhere. I'm hoping the retail version keeps a hole somewhere on that squircle, because I would rather carry a slightly less elegant tracker than one that needs a purchase before it can do its job.
