According to reliable leaker Ice Universe, Samsung now plans to produce 2.8 million Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide units. That will be more than the 2 million units of the standard model, which will be known as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and 1.5 million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 8. The original plan called for Samsung to produce an equal number of Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra units.
Where you can watch the summer 2026 Samsung Unpacked event
Samsung will unveil its 2026 foldable series on July 22, this coming Wednesday. The festivities start at 6 AM PDT/9 AM EDT/2 PM BST/3 PM CEST/9 PM MYT, and you can watch it taking place live from Samsung.com, Samsung Newsroom US, and Samsung's Official YouTube Channel.
This is a milestone year for the foldable market with Apple expected to join in, finally, with its first foldable phone. At first, we dubbed it the iPhone Fold, but a more compelling moniker, the iPhone Ultra, has become the consensus guess for the name of Apple's book-style foldable.
How Apple and Samsung are each handling their crease problem
The big news is that Apple and Samsung are handling the "crease problem" for the internal tablet-sized displays in two different ways. Samsung is replacing the usual plastic support layers found underneath the foldable OLED glass with Titanium-Alloy Film. The latter is one-third the thickness of a human hair but is 20 times as stiff as the polymer film used previously, and it prevents the glass from sagging along the hinge.
Under that is a titanium plate drilled with microscopic holes along the seam where it folds. This allows the plate to flex without cracking. The design of this plate also eliminates air gaps, giving the screen more support when opened.

Apple's crease removal plans call for the use of custom Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) that is thinner at the point where the display folds. This gives the screen more flexibility. The outer ends of the UTG are thicker for rigidity. Apple is also employing 3D-printed mechanical hinges that use fewer mechanical parts, and a clear adhesive that expands to mask physical dips when the internal screen is open.
Samsung's plan is to use the stiff, micro-perforated titanium plates to pull the screen taut from underneath.
