Galaxy S27 Ultra is going to feel like rain after a drought

The Galaxy S27 Ultra, and by extension the Galaxy S27 Pro, might break a curse. Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 duo comes with silicon-carbon batteries (Si-C). The tech packs more energy into the same footprint. Samsung's next flagships are also appear ready to ditch lithium-ion cells.
Sunghoon Moon, Executive Vice President of Mobile Research and Development at Samsung Electronics, recently shared hopeful news.
He said that conventional phones will adopt Si-C batteries as long as they improve the user experience.
Samsung is already heading down that path, per a new Galaxy Club report.
The Galaxy S Ultra lineup has featured a 5,000mAh battery for seven years. The Galaxy S27 Pro is reportedly a new model that will slot below the Ultra.
The Galaxy S27 Pro could feature a cell with a rated capacity of 5,087mAh. It will likely be advertised as 5,200mAh typical.
The S27 Ultra may flaunt a 5,534mAh rated cell, translating to a typical capacity of 5,700mAh, or potentially even 5,800mAh.
Samsung cannot use Li-ion cells this large without making the phones thicker.

What should Samsung do?
Don't get too excited just yet
Si-C is still a relatively new tech. While Chinese manufacturers rushed to adopt it, mainstream companies exercised caution.
However, with rival brands raising the bar, Samsung is finally following suit.
Si-C batteries pose challenges such as swelling, so ensuring safety is critical. Samsung didn't just switch to a new battery chemistry for the Fold 8. It reengineered the entire battery system and designed Flex Titanium to free up space.
Samsung will likely proceed with the same caution with the S27 Ultra and Pro. Thus, it's possible that the company is only testing higher-capacity batteries for now.
No time to waste
Samsung won't be able to get away with a 5,000mAh battery anymore. Chinese companies have crossed the 10,000mAh mark. Even the iPhone 18 Pro Max might flaunt a 5,391mAh Li-ion battery.
Since the iPhone 18 Pro Max will stick with the old tech, it could turn out to be unwieldy. With a Si-C cell, the S27 Ultra could offer better endurance in a thinner, lighter package.
