Steve Jobs once famously said that stylus pens did not belong on the iPhone. Apple has now unveiled its long-awaited foldable flagship, the iPhone Duo, which supports the Apple Pen.
This is something that the company’s new CEO — John Ternus — is in favor of, and I can understand why.

This was a position that Steve Jobs firmly held. He had argued that the human finger was the best tool that a customer could use for a device with a touch screen.
In a post-iPhone-Duo-announcement interview with Apple’s new CEO — John Ternus — and Senior Vice President of Marketing — Greg “Joz” Joswiak — this “unwritten rule” was brought up.
In response, Ternus said that he never really looked at that as a rule. He followed up with how the Apple Pencil is a very versatile and useful tool that will greatly enhance some tasks on the iPhone Duo.

Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo
The iPhone Duo, much like an iPad, supports the Apple Pencil. Technically, it can be argued that Apple went against Jobs’ beliefs when the Apple Pencil first came out. Nevertheless, a stylus pen for an iPhone is a first.
Ternus argued that there are certain tasks that can be done with much greater control with a stylus. “Joz” added on to that and said that the iPhone Duo was like two devices in one, an iPhone and an iPad.

You don’t need to use the Apple Pencil if you don’t want to, but the option is there for those who do.
Deviating further from Steve Jobs’ vision

Many have argued that Apple has been deviating from Steve Jobs’ original vision for a very long time now. Design language, user experience, available functionality, everything has changed.
Jobs was also strictly against laptops with touch screens, calling the concept an “ergonomically terrible” one. Yet, Apple is about to announce a new MacBook with a touch screen. While such laptops are out there, they aren’t particularly popular, and Apple users generally agree that such a MacBook wouldn’t be of much use.

Apple Pencil support for the iPhone Duo is just another example of Apple changing with the times.

Here’s the thing, Steve Jobs was a great part of Apple’s history, but he wasn’t infallible (remember his response to Antennagate?). While I’ve personally never found touch screen laptops to be worth it, a stylus pen for a handheld device is most definitely a plus point.
The world has moved on and Apple needs to move forward with it. What Jobs believed almost two decades ago simply does not apply to the tech industry of today and Ternus is perfectly justified in thinking that something Jobs wouldn’t have approved of back then is a good idea today.
