It's official: Motorola has a new foldable in the works, and it's aimed directly at the iPhone Duo

Motorola's "next move" in the foldable landscape will be a wide-type alternative to the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8, although no other details are known right now.

You know the first-gen Razr Fold that Motorola frustratingly waited until January 2026 to formally unveil and then April 2026 to commercially release as a direct rival for Samsung's seven-year-old Galaxy Fold family?

Despite not exactly selling like hotcakes for fairly obvious reasons (including extravagant pricing and the use of an unimpressive Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC), it appears that the brand's rookie book-style foldable effort will spawn a sequel before long... although it might be more fitting to describe the next-gen device as a spin-off based on what the company is teasing on social media.

If you're like me, your X feed was probably flooded with Apple announcements and hot takes on said announcements between 10 am Pacific Time yesterday and... many, many hours later. That means you (like me) almost certainly missed an intriguing Motorola tweet and 8-second video that were clearly timed to coincide with the iPhone Duo launch.

But we're going to talk about this now, starting with Moto's not-very-subtle jab at Apple's foldable entry tardiness. While the Cupertino-based tech giant is "just discovering" this type of device, Motorola claims that it's been making the concept "even better" for numerous years now, starting with the dumb old Razr from all the way back in 2004 and then continuing with the reimagined Android-powered flip phone from 2019.

In a way, you can't really argue with this point, as history is definitely on Motorola's side, but at the same time, Samsung could make a similar argument about the book-style Razr Fold, which came so many years after the original Galaxy Fold.

So when is the "Razr Wide Fold" coming?

No one knows for the time being, but what felt pretty distant and not at all etched in stone just a couple of days ago is officially confirmed and possibly a lot closer than you may have suspected.

If you blink, you'll surely miss what's essentially the first real depiction of a wider and shorter foldable device than the current Razr Fold. I don't necessarily expect this model to be called the Motorola Razr Wide Fold (because it doesn't have a very nice ring to it), but for now, that definitely works as a placeholder name.

Given the market's fairly clear overall form factor preference following Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra launches, I wouldn't rule out this being the only Razr Fold 2 or Razr Fold (2027) device in the pipeline either, although I don't have anything to base that theory on other than a gut feeling.

I also strongly suspect that a formal announcement and perhaps even a commercial debut could take place by the end of 2026, and knowing Motorola as well as I do, I think it's possible a launch event will be scheduled for this month or the next. Oh, the "Razr Wide Fold" is also virtually guaranteed for a US release already based on this teaser being posted on both the company's global and regional X channels.

What can you expect from Motorola's iPhone Duo alternative?

You probably think I'm going to say that I have no idea what this device will bring to the table, but that's actually not entirely true. The sketches leaked earlier this week revealed quite a few (marketing) details, including the presence of a creaseless display, "ultra slim housing", 3D glass, and an "easy-open profile."

Those are all advertising buzzwords that may or may not materialize in key real-life usability elements and actual strengths over the iPhone Duo and Galaxy Z Fold 8, but they definitely prove that Motorola has big plans for and great expectations from its first passport-style foldable.

Personally, I remain (cautiously) excited about the horizontal camera layout on the back of the "Razr Wide Fold", which should help the device with its stability when placed flat on a desk or table.
