Nothing may be preparing a surprising move after recent restructuring rumors

Instead of exiting some markets, Nothing is reportedly expanding into a new category.

Less than a week ago, a bombshell report suggested Nothing might follow the OnePlus example (sort of). Those rumors were later refuted by a company executive who explained the company is currently 'reorganizing and preparing for the next stage of growth.'

Seeing how the OnePlus situation unfolded in a similar way, the whole thing might feel like déjà vu. But a new leak suggests Nothing isn't done yet. While some restructuring may be underway, the company is reportedly preparing to launch its first-ever smartwatch.

Nothing smartwatch reportedly in the works

On July 28, renowned leaker Yogesh Brar shared some exclusive details on X. According to him, the company is getting ready to release a smartwatch, the first one for the brand.

Brar adds that the device will feature Nothing's signature design language and is expected to arrive in September. The smartwatch is also rumored to cost around $300.

Then comes the bad news: Brar says the Nothing smartwatch will be released in limited markets.

Yogesh Brar is one of the most reliable leakers in the mobile tech space, so we have every reason to believe his claims. Of course, we'll still have to wait for an official announcement before anything is confirmed.

Plenty of challenges ahead

While Nothing entering the smartwatch industry sounds exciting, the biggest question is whether the company will use Wear OS. If it goes with a custom interface similar to the one found on the CMF Watch 3 Pro, mainstream Android users may not be as interested, especially those who expect long-term software reliability and a familiar app ecosystem.

Still, the $300 smartwatch segment isn't exactly overcrowded. The Pixel Watch 4, for example, starts at $349.99, while Samsung's just-announced Galaxy Watch 9 sits at $379.99. That leaves some room for a company like Nothing to offer something different, especially if it keeps the MSRP strictly under $350.

Will the shutdown rumors play a role?

As I see it, even if Nothing brings something truly unique to the table, some buyers may still be unwilling to take the risk. For many, choosing an established brand with a longer track record of supporting its products will be the obvious choice.

When it comes to smartwatches, long-term software reliability and frequent app updates matter just as much as specs. If Nothing wants to be truly competitive in the market, it will need to reassure users that all of these shutdown rumors are indeed nothing more than gossip.

Another Nothing way to stand out

We can talk about the potential success or failure of a product that doesn't officially exist yet all we like. But the first question that comes to mind is much simpler: what will the Nothing smartwatch actually look like?

Even though I'm not 100% sold on Nothing phones, I can't deny their design feels like a breath of fresh air. If this philosophy is put into the design of the brand's upcoming wearable, I would expect a device that stands out with its looks just as much as it does with specs (if not more).
