Nothing OS 5.0 is official, and three Nothing phones are already off the list

That answers the question people tend to ask when a skin gets redesigned, since the old look is not being taken away from anyone who prefers it.

Where this puts Nothing against everyone else

For anyone already on a Nothing phone, the changes you will feel daily are the small ones, like Bluetooth devices connecting from Quick Settings in one tap and QR results holding still in the camera instead of chasing the code around the frame. The bigger question is timing, because Nothing is putting a finished Android 17 skin into beta in August and shipping it in October, which is quick for a company this size.

Pixel owners have been on stable Android 17 since the summer, so they have had the privacy indicators, Live Updates and the Quick Share changes for months already. Motorola is the closer comparison, and when we went through its Android 17 betas in July, the expectation was stable builds arriving late in the third or fourth quarter, with the mid-range Edge and Moto G lines waiting until late 2026 or early 2027.

Nothing OS has also been the part of these phones we rate most highly. Our Phone (3) review gave its software an 8.0 against a 7.2 price-class average, even as the phone scored 6.8 overall.

I went through the comment section under Nothing's post and found the reaction split fairly cleanly, between excitement about the update itself and frustration from people whose phones are not on the list.



The Phone (2) complaints were the sharpest, with one commenter noting the phone was still being sold new as the flagship two years ago. Another replied that the support window was public before purchase, which is a fair point even though it does not soften the outcome much.

Everything new, and when your phone gets it

Here's what is in the update:

• Geist as the new system typeface, plus redesigned Settings, custom status bar icons and a Camera change that pins QR results in place instead of making them track the code
• A new home screen theme with wallpaper-adaptive icon tints and transparent widgets, offered alongside the current style
• Two new lock screen clock faces, Gooey and Micrographics, with colours you can pull from your wallpaper
• Home screen batch editing, a dedicated Glyph app, a Glyph Timer widget, an Away Time widget and a Collector widget
• Faster Essential Voice with real-time transcription, Smart Collections in Essential Space, read-only Model Context Protocol support arriving in October and Essential Apps Builder moving onto the phone itself
• From Android 17: split Notifications and Quick Settings panels, Quick Share by QR code that works to an iPhone, three-colour privacy indicators, Live Updates capsules, Noto 3D Emoji, Expanded Dark Theme, separate assistant volume and Enhanced HDR brightness

The rollout then runs in waves. The Phone (3) reaches general release in mid-October, the (4a) and (3a) families follow in early November and the (2a) pair arrives in mid-November.

The Phone (3a) Lite and CMF Phone 2 Pro skip the beta entirely and go straight to general release in late December and mid-January, putting the CMF roughly five months behind the Phone (3). Nothing also confirmed that the Phone (1), Phone (2) and CMF Phone 1 have reached the end of major software support and will not get this update, which is the same staggered pattern we saw with the Nothing OS 4 rollout.

The part I will be watching

What stands out to me is the gap between what was announced and what people can actually try. The redesigned Launcher is the biggest visual change in this whole update, and it is not in the beta.

So the feedback Nothing collects over the next two months will be on a version missing the piece most people are curious about. I'm hoping it turns up in a later beta build before October rather than arriving cold at general release, because a redesign this size is exactly the kind of thing you want thousands of people poking holes in first.
