Nothing halts OS 4 update (based on Android 16) for certain models
Nothing will eventually resume the OTA update after certain issues are patched.
On November 21st, Nothing released its Android 16 based Nothing OS 4 update for the Nothing Phone 3. A week later, it was available for older Nothing Phones. Unfortunately for users, the update was buggier than a Raid test lab. And there are now indications that Nothing has halted the update as it works to make corrections and fix the issues. At the start of this month, a report from TechiBoy noted that Nothing Phone (2a) and Phone (2a) Plus users discovered the update missing from their system update page.
That's all from my experience. I guess it's still apparent and common enough to warrant pausing the update to fix those (and other more I haven't experienced)."
An incorrect message may have led to Nothing's decision to halt the update
Those who installed the update early still have the stable version of Nothing OS 4 installed but those who did not update yet no longer have that option made available to them. The main issue that caused Nothing to pause the update was a message received by those who updated their phones that read that their Nothing Phone was now "enrolled in the Android Beta Program" even though the update was a stable release. The message confused users and is probably one of the reasons for the pause.
The update brings new features including updated status bar icons including a new Dual SIM icon, a new horizontal battery icon, a new battery percentage icon shown outside of the battery icon, and new Wi-Fi and Data icons. You'll see a new lockscreen blur effect, new charging animation and an updated power saving icon.
"We highly appreciate you for the clarification. We received feedback from the relevant team and we are regret to inform you we have temporarily halted and removed the current 4.0 rollout and are working on an urgent fix. Once the corrected version has completed urgent testing: Users who already updated to 4.0 will receive a new patched update. Users who have not received the new 4.0 update will receive the proper official version once the rollout resumes. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we work to deliver a stable update as soon as possible."
-Email from Nothing
Owners of the Nothing Phone (2), were supposedly able to install Nothing OS 4 without a hitch. However, one owner of that model wrote on Reddit about his experience with the update. "I got the update on last Wednesday night on my NP2 and there are a couple of bugs but nothing that's critical imo:
- Hiding status bar icons resets back to default (eg: hiding NFC icon will reset to showing again after a couple of hours).
- You can see the tapping animation when going into a Setting within Settings and going back,
- No navigation bar animation for scrolling through apps or activating Gemini.
- Small quick setting glitch where it shoes the (-) as if I'm editing my Quick Setting tiles when I'm not. Entering and leaving editing fixes it.
That's all from my experience. I guess it's still apparent and common enough to warrant pausing the update to fix those (and other more I haven't experienced)."
Here's what to expect if you own a Nothing Phone (2a) and Nothing (2a) Plus
The report says that to fix the aforementioned message issue, Nothing will release a hotfix update possibly within the next 1-2 days. After giving device owners the time to install that patch, Nothing will try again and release Nothing OS 4 for the Nothing Phone (2a) and Nothing Phone (2a) Plus. While Nothing hasn't officially announced a halt in the dissemination of Nothing OS 4, at least one Nothing user received an email from the company informing him that the update has been halted.
He was also told that those who installed Nothing OS 4 will receive a patched update and those who haven't installed OS 4 yet will receive the complete OTA update once Nothing resumes the rollout. If you were lucky enough to already install the update, you can continue to use it without an issue. If you have yet to install Nothing OS 4, be on the lookout for the hotfix and the subsequent return of the Nothing OS 4 update.
