The sequel to the iPad (A16) was first expected earlier this year, but later rumors claimed it would launch in the spring of 2027, while the upcoming iPad mini (A17 Pro) is likely coming this fall. While we’ve heard about the potential upgrades before, a new software leak may have set some of their key specs in stone.

iPad Gen 12 may get an A19 chipset after all

Apple’s base iPad may get an upgrade with a faster chip than expected later this year. The device was first rumored to sport an A18 chip, but new details found inside Apple’s code by MacRumors suggest it will actually come with an A19 processor.

Besides the chip, which was also used in the iPhone 17, the tablet may also feature the C1X modem and N1 networking chip. The base iPad is also expected to come with 8GB of RAM, which will provide it with a significant performance upgrade and Apple Intelligence support.

The next iPad mini will come with a slightly different design

The leaked code has also revealed more details about the next-generation iPad mini. The tablet is now practically confirmed to come with the same A20 Pro chip found inside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo.

Even more interestingly, leaked images reveal that the iPad mini 8 may also move the front camera to the long side of the display. The images also show a small groove cut out of the top of the display glass, probably for a speaker.

Earlier rumors have already claimed there will be a new vibration-based speaker on the tablet, which is also expected to be water resistant. The most important upgrade is expected to be the switch to an OLED display, which could be slightly bigger than on earlier models, but sticks to the 60Hz refresh rate.

Users on Reddit appear intrigued by the new iPad mini, though its purpose is heavily questioned after the premiere of the iPhone Duo. However, a main concern about the new model appears to be the refresh rate of its display, which is deemed unacceptable by many, especially considering the price.

It’s basically all about AI

Even though the iPad mini 8 is getting a display upgrade, this time around Apple appears focused on AI. I am still skeptical about AI features in general, but the initial impression of Siri AI has been surprisingly good. Even if I’d prefer something more, this could end up being a nicer update to the iPad than I previously imagined.
