After the sequel to the base iPad (A16) didn’t arrive in the spring, rumor had it that Apple would still launch it later in the year. Apparently not only will the premiere be delayed, but Apple may also stick to rather conservative upgrades.
New base iPad may launch in 2027 with minimal upgrades
Apple won’t launch an iPad upgrade this year, instead planning to announce it in the first quarter of 2027, according to a new report from Apple insider Mark Gurman on Bloomberg. Despite the delay, the device won’t get any major design changes or significant display improvements.
Instead, the main new feature of the device with the code name J581 will be a faster processor. Earlier rumors claimed that could be the A18 chip found inside the iPhone 16 and MacBook Neo, though other sources claimed Apple may opt for the newer A19 processor used in the iPhone 17.
What would you lake for Apple to change in the 12th generation iPad?

Meanwhile, the iPad mini is expected “as early as this fall,” probably in October. The small tablet is also expected to feature an OLED display, though it may not support a faster refresh rate and Apple’s ProMotion technology.
This could mean bad news for fans of the iPad mini, as it could lead to an even higher price. The tablet already suffered a price hike from $499 to its new $599 starting price.

Also in the spring, Apple is planning to launch new iPad Air models, which may also feature OLED displays. Around the same time, the company may launch new iPad Pro models as well as a new Apple Pencil with a replaceable battery.
In his in-depth review of the iPad (A16), my colleague Peter said that was the perfect tablet for most people, offering decent performance and good battery life. However, the successor of this tablet will be the third model with the same design, and it’ll certainly cost more, which could mean trouble for Apple.
Doing it for the AI
Whichever chip Apple chooses, the 12th generation iPad will certainly support Apple Intelligence. The AI-powered features require at least 8GB of RAM to work, and both the A18 and the A19 chips offer that amount.
I’m not particularly excited about Siri AI, especially on an iPad, but it’s still a nice addition. However, I’d prefer for Apple to offer something more, considering the higher prices.
