While I wouldn't call myself an Apple fanboy, I definitely appreciate the responsiveness and reliability of macOS—two things I just cannot say for Windows, especially given how many times yours truly had to face the legendary Blue Screen of Death.
Given how much I enjoy the whole MacBook experience, I decided to see whether Amazon has a sweet deal on one right now. After all, it’s Prime Day, which is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, so it makes sense for the retailer to offer sweet discounts on Apple’s MacBooks.
Well, I’m excited to share that you can indeed snatch a new Apple laptop for much less than usual. Not only that, but you can save quite a sum on what I think is the best MacBook for most users: the latest MacBook Air with the M5 chip.
Amazon is selling the 13-inch variant with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for under $950, saving you $150. From what I can tell, the offer applies to all color options, so you can pick the one that best matches your style.
I totally get that $950 may still seem steep, especially since we now have the MacBook Neo. But let me tell you this: while I like that Apple decided to introduce a cheap laptop, the MacBook Neo is mostly good for students and people who just want something to browse the web and watch Apple TV series on. For the vast majority of people, the MacBook Air—more specifically, the MacBook Air with the M5 chip—is the better choice.
First and foremost, you get the same high-quality aluminum build, keyboard with Touch ID, and trackpad found on the MacBook Pros. That means typing long emails, essays, or just chatting with friends will feel effortless and fast. I don’t know what magic Apple used, but its trackpads are the best on the market, so you can basically put your mouse in a drawer somewhere and navigate using only gestures on the pad.
Unlike the Neo, which comes with an iPhone chip, the Air rocks the latest M5 silicon, which is exceptionally fast, and I’m willing to bet that an ordinary person can’t reach its limits. The only way you can make this thing stutter is if you’re doing demanding professional work, like compiling heavy coding projects or video editing a huge file with a ton of effects.
Then again, if you do that kind of stuff, you’ll be going for one of the MacBook Pro models anyway. The MacBook Air is incredibly thin and light, which makes it easier to carry around and work from your favorite cafe. But the downside of that is it has no active cooling. Without a fan to push heat out, it throttles quickly under heavy, sustained workloads.
The screen is also top-notch here. Sure, it’s not the fancy Mini-LED panel you get on the more expensive MacBooks, but it’s still color-accurate and delivers gorgeous visuals.
My only complaints are the 60Hz refresh rate and the 500 nits of brightness. While you get used to the lower refresh rate, you might have trouble seeing what’s going on on the screen when using it in direct sunlight outdoors. Indoors, however, you shouldn't have any issues.
Add to that great-sounding speakers, dual-monitor support, and a battery that delivers up to 18 hours of video streaming or up to 15 hours of web browsing, and you get a laptop that ticks all the right boxes. So, don’t miss out—tap either the deal button at the beginning of the article or the one in the product box and snatch a brand-new MacBook Air with the M5 chip today!
