The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is on a roll. Chairman Brendan Carr recently announced two major spectrum auctions, and T-Mobile couldn't be happier.
Making the US a connectivity leader
Next year, the FCC will auction 160 megahertz of spectrum in the Upper C-Band (3.98-4.14 GHz), putting 3,248 licenses up for grabs.
When combined with the existing Lower C-band, this will form a massive "super band" spanning 440 megahertz (3.70-4.14 GHz). No other country has a contiguous 5G mid-band block this large.
The FCC is auctioning 60% more spectrum than the 100 megahertz minimum required by law. It's expected to bring in tens of billions of dollars for the Treasury, while letting carriers improve service.

Speaking at the FCC Open Commission Meeting, Carr also committed to holding several auctions in 2028, including for the 2.7 GHz band.
By auctioning off this prime spectrum, the FCC aims to fix the spectrum shortage carriers face.
T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan has hailed the decision as a stepping stone to 6G, expecting the extra mid-band spectrum to solidify the US's wireless leadership.

With the auction talks centering on 6G, you might be wondering if you'll have to wait until 2030 to feel the benefits of the extra spectrum. That seems to be the case.
The rules dictate that carriers must wait until December 2030 to light up the Upper C-band in the top 75 markets, and until July 2031 for everywhere else.

A commendable step
The FCC notes that the new rules build on the success of the Lower C-band auction from President Trump’s first term. That auction brought 5G internet to the masses.
The availability of more spectrum is expected to drive down prices, improve speeds, and bolster competition.
