Xperia Z5 family receiving Android Nougat update

Sony has begun upgrading its Xperia Z5 series of devices to Android 7.0 Nougat today. The update, which brings the five-month old release of the mobile OS, is currently live for several variants of the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium, but will hopefully be released for the rest of the line shortly.

While using the Z5 last year, we found its software to be less than satisfactory, due to its lack of basic features and its abundance of bugs. Whether these problems have been fixed in this or previous updates is up for debate, but this particular build, numbered 32.3.A.0.372, promises a number of changes. Beside the stock Nougat improvements, such as multi-window support and expanded notification functionality, updated devices should have better battery life, new features in the messaging and camera apps, and Google Now integration in the built-in Xperia Home Launcher. The update is unfortunately not based on Android 7.1.1, but rather on the five-month-old 7.0 instead, meaning users might miss out on some new features.

Nougat has been steadily rolling out to Xperia devices for the past couple of months, after its release for the X series, and the flagship Xperia XZ. So if you're still sporting a Marshmallow device, such as the Z5 Compact or the Z3+, chances are high you're next on the list to be upgraded.
