This infographic explores the early years of smartphones and the rise of the iPhone
Imagine a world without smartphones. Go on, we'll wait. Now remember the first time you grasped such a device in your hand and try to reminisce of the feelings that you experienced at that point. While many of you will hardly recall their first encounter with a smartphone, you can surely remember the exact make and model of the device.

Depending on your age, you might have witnessed the rise and fall of certain manufacturers, as well as the gradual shift towards more uniform, less discerning from one another smartphones. We've already made several picks of the more notable smartphones from the early years of the industry, as well as some of the more unique and distinct devices of the "classic period". Most devices were different, emphasized on a different bevy of features, and the bigger portion among them provided a rather distinctive user experience. Then Apple created the iPhone and the beginning of the end of the "classic era" commenced.

Right below you'll find a neat infographic that explores the first years of the fledgling smartphone industry and the rise of Apple's most successful product ever.

Thanks for the tip, Dave!

If theres no iPhone, the smartphones will not be the same as it is today. That's a fact.

Also if there was no Iphone, Symbian would still be alive today.

I dont think so. Symbian is already on its dead end on that time. It had its gold-and-glory days, then met it's graceful end. By the time it was open sourced, it was already too late.

Nokia running Symbian OS months before the first Iphone was released was still at the top. But after Iphone's release, it started to decline. Iphone introduced IOS which was 10 or 100 times more advanced than Symbian. If there was no Iphone, Symbian would still have a chance to develop a more advance version and go toe to toe with the then Android OS. Iphone made Symbian's fate sealed.

IOS still isn't as advanced as Symbian^3, let alone Anna or Belle. Sure it's dated, but in terms of pure "advancement", Symbian is still tops, even compared to Android, which is catching up and has been through a lot to get to that point.

Symbian was great in features but user Experience was not so great. Its just Nokia lacked vision at that time(with all respect to Nokia) or Apple out think them or nokia was blinded by their power/dominance or a false sense of security. I remember those laggy days of Symbian where I have to wait 15minutes after switch-ON the phone to complete app installation(everytime on n73 with nearly 20apps installed). But I love Symbian.

And to look now, Apple seems to be like Nokia from the past. Playing the catch-up.

From the first to the fourth iPhone I was excited to buy it. From 5 to 6, it was like meh. Nothing new. So switched to Android and WP and never looked back to iOS.

I agree 100%. It was really great till 4. All other OEMs were catching up to iPhone till 4.i believe 4 was one of top resolution phones out there on its time.

one phone was better HTC Evo 4G if u could get coverage (i live in Los angeles, so, I Did!) it had True 4G high speed internet, an 8mp camera with decent software vs their 5mp one, had a biger screen With a KICKSTAND (oh, how i miss you), had WiFi Hotspot, so i had internet for EVERYONE around me (i even played PLAYSTATION 3 Call of Duty off its 4G speed!!), and its Data was UNLIMITED!!! For the life of me, i dont know WHY any one would have an iphone at that time when THIS phone was out!!!! the EVO 4G was one of the Original Beasts. Hell, its STILL better than the iphone 5

You're actually right. Smartphones would have been much better today, as there are no pathetic patents that would draw the OEMs back.

Those are PDAs, not smartphones. Jurassic Blackberrys some might say.

You could make calls on them before the iPhone launched. And Ted is right. Why was the iPhone so radically different vs the competition? Because Apple wanted to be different. Different than.....Palm and Win Mo and BB. If there was no Palm, Win Mo and BB....there would be no iPhone as we know it.

They started out being sold as PDAs, but later integrated the GSM modules to become smartphones. What's so different if we take out the GSM modules on today's phones?

Apple took a different approach in mobile os, Have you ever scroll like you do on iPhone? It's a small thing, but it changes how you use a phone. And those smooth animations on the first iPhone, it has feeling into it, that makes us crazy using a phone. From the original iPhone, until now every smartphone OS still takes the same approach, ubuntu touch, android, BB os, etc. have the same approach, only different 'gimmicky' features.

Computer before Apple, no mouse. Smartphones before Apple, no multi touch. Smartwatch before Apple, no digital crown. Right fandroid? :)

You're advocating for the digital crown as a good thing? That's pretty hilarious. I was embarrassed for Apple fans/users when I saw that thing.

Agree on first two statements not much on digital crown thingy. Apple watch didn't impress me much but i should wait for it to get released before judging. And apple wasn't simply bringing some small functionality with iPhones (like mouse, multi touch etc). They changed everything with iPhones they changed the whole user experience with iPhones.

Apple didn't really invent any of those. As of digital crown, what special does it have? Nothing. Apple told you it's revolutionary and it's gonna change your life. Of course you'll just believe them.

THAAAAANNNKKK YOUUUUU!!!! Mega Evolution is a true idiot for even MENTIONING the Digi crown... as i read it i was like 'Whooooooooo CARES?!?!' if not a gimmick, all it is, is a means to an end. in NO WAY is it a Better Mouse Trap
