Surprise: Turns out iPhone Duo main camera is smaller than iPhone 18 Pro
The main camera on the iPhone Duo is not as capable as the 18 Pro.

In the past couple of weeks, I've been using the new iPhone Duo alongside the Samsung Galaxy Fold 8, trying to figure out which is the better foldable phone.
I have tested their battery life, software experience, and cameras, but one surprising new detail has just surfaced from a recent teardown video by WekiHome.
While we initially thought that the iPhone Duo comes with the same main camera sensor as the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, it turns out that's not the case. The teardown actually confirms that Apple is using a considerably smaller, 1/1.59-inch sensor. This is basically the same sensor size it uses on the vanilla iPhone 17 model (the sensor model is slightly different on the Duo, but the size is the same).

The Sony IMX954 on the iPhone Duo is roughly 30% smaller in sensor area than the Sony IMX905 used on the iPhone 18 Pro, or conversely, the IMX905 has about 40% more sensor area.
Sensor size alone surely does not tell the whole story, but such a big difference in size is difficult to overcome with just software.
I've noticed that photo quality from the Duo is actually not much worse than from the iPhone 18 Pro, but it's still not quite the same.
Importantly, this new revelation about the sensor size puts the iPhone Duo on the same footing as Samsung's Galaxy Fold 8, which also uses the same sensor size for both the main and ultra-wide cameras.
To me, this is yet another little detail that shows that foldable phones are undeniably fun, but still surprisingly lagging in other areas, especially when you consider their astronomical prices.
