Sony Xperia XZ Premium starts receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update

Sony has just announced it has kicked off the roll-out of Android 8.0 Oreo and the first smartphone to receive the update is the Xperia XZ Premium. Last week, the company confirmed the Oreo will be pushed to the Xperia XZ Premium starting December, but it looks like that timeframe was only available for Japan.

So, even though the roll-out of Android Oreo for Xperia XZ Premium begins today, this is a phased process, which means timing and availability will vary by market and/or carrier.

It's also worth mentioning that the Xperia XZ Premium Rosso, which was unveiled last week, will make its debut in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Middle East & Africa with Android 8.0 Oreo on board.

The Android Oreo announcement contains some details about the changes Sony plans to include in the update, such as 3D Creator, predictive capture, autofocus burst, improved sound quality and app shortcuts.

These improvements will be implemented in addition to all those that Google packed in Android 8.0 Oreo and that you can read about in our full review of the OS.

Quite a shocker actually! Sony is almost always the OEM that sends out the latest software update, usually landing April/May the next year. Great job Sony.

super late reply but like the usual arrangement when it comes to updates arriving to OEMs was like Google/Nexus then Motorola/HTC then LG/Huawei then Samsung/Sony are last. and now times have changed. Now it's Google Pixel, Sony/HTC/Motorola, and now we're all waiting for the others to catch up (yow Sammy, what up?)

The update also includes an option in the camera settings named "correction for image distortion" so that should probably fix the problems that some users had with their images.

Will we get Double Tap back? Looks like no... I really hope they fix the touch screen bug too which has been present in the 5 XZP handsets I've owned... Still can't believe they didn't release the phone with a "photo burst" mode. Sony might be rolling out Android 8, but farken they've dropped the ball on core features..
