Samsung's DJ Koh: 'I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8'

If anyone still has lingering doubts whether Samsung is done and dusted with the Note line, the latest statements from the head of Samsung's mobile unit, D.J. Koh, should dispel them. Not only there is going to be a Note 7 successor, but Mr Koh declared "I will bring back a better, safer and very innovative Note 8" with aplomb. After all, he has been part of the team that developed the idea for the original S Pen stylus, so it's hard to do away with such a differentiator on Samsung's part.

Corporate nostalgia is not the only thing there is to it, though, as the company has determined, during the course of its Note 7 mishap investigation, that there are a lot of Note line fans out there who are nonplussed about the whole shebang, and hope that Samsung will release a successor.

Many Galaxy Note 4 and Note 5 owners in particular have "made it clear, they want a Note," adds Tim Baxter, the chief of Samsung's US branch. We can only agree, and can't wait to see what Samsung is cooking for this year's Note 8 edition - after all, it will have to eventually clash directly against a 5.8" OLED iPhone 8 with wraparound display come defoliation time this fall.

Don't be a troll. Success is how high you bounce back, after hitting rock bottom. This was Samsung's rock bottom. They'll learn from their mistake and bring us some awesome devices.

At least Samsung doesn't kill people and crash planes like exploding Apple iPhones that kill 66 people on Egypt Airlines.

The note line doesn't really have that many advantages to other phones as opposed before. now all the specs of all phone models are the same all year round with little to no innovation going on. what's more the note 8 will have a huge screen, SD 835, curved display, no home button, above average battery life, glass now this sounds like so many other phones that'll be released this year. Samsung knows most people are gullible and they're taking advantage of it, by making phones with little to no increment and including the S-Pen for good measure (which isn't really practical anyway). what's worse, this phone is gonna be huge, whatever the screen to body ratio.

I agree with you that it doesn't have an advantage in terms of specs like SOC, Camera module or even screen and other smaller things. But I completely disagree with you on S-pen not being practical and bigger size being worse. I had note 5 then got S7 edge. Except for the performance and camera, I found note 5 better. You won't know how useful is S-pen without trying it out first. Wacom digitizer makes S-pen better than 3rd party stylus but all note features make S-pen useful. Also even if note 7 was incremental update it was praised as best phone by many reviewers.

I'm not a marketing gooru. And I know Samsung is in it for the $$$. But, I wish for the Note series to become the "Swiss Army Knife" of business devices, while the pop-culture devices are in the S series. Note line has unmatched specs, extra durability, replaceable battery, better durability and more conservative business look. S series has multiple sizes, the best of pop-culture design and appeal, focus on social media and personal use with ever bell and whistle imagineable. Don't shout me down for dreamin'.

So, you think people who want a Note are gullible. If someone is going to spend $900 on something, they may think to ask what are the differences between it and the $600 device. Your personal opinion on the S-pen is just that, your personal opinion. If someone doesn't share your opinion, it doesn't make them gullible. The real question is, would you rather have a phone with an s-pen or without an s-pen? And for many, with the S-pen is better. I personally could care less about "peeking and popping" with force touch, or sending my heartbeats to people with an iWatch. However, it doesn't make the people who want those things "gullible". Its means they like force touch. What's best, this phone will be smaller than many other high-end "plus"-sized devices, and have an S-pen, whatever the screen to body ratio.

The Note doesn't compete directly with the iPhone, The Galaxy S does. Just because PA compares the Note to the iPhone, doesn't make it a fair comparison. They've compared lots of phones to the Note. I would say any phone that isn't accompanied by stylus is not even in the Note category. The Galaxy S compete directly and is the phone Samsung uses as their flagship to compete with the iPhone. The iPhone isn't even in the Note's league. Its not because the iPhone doesn't have a Pen. But it doesn't have much of any of the Note features. Everything that PA is claiming the iPhone 8 is going to be, the Galaxy S has been since the S6 Edge/Edge+. The Note is in its own category and it is shared by no other phone, much of which is do to its S-Pen based hardware. Even Note users consider the S7 edge to be a downgrade from the Note 7. The fact you guys are blind to this is dumb. Yes the Note and S as of the S6 share the same CPU and CPU. But the S doesn't have all of the Note features, because those extra features are tied directly to the Note's design language and the S-Pen. That is why the Note 7 had a less pronounced curve vs the S7 Edge. The Note 7 looks better than the S7 edge too, eben if the design is similar. For me, the S6 Edge, looks better than the S7 edge. Even though the S7 edge is more comfortable to hold, to me in my opinion the S6 edge looks better and I didn't think the sides felt all that sharp like some complained. Even though the Note 7 and S7 edge aren't all that much different from a spec standpoint, the difference as to why people buy the Note do matter. They are willing to pay extra for the S-Pen. When I switched to the S6 Edge+, I kept reaching for my pen and it sucked when it wasn't there. I bought it because I didn't like the Note 5. # months later I JUMP! to the Note 5 because I needed my pen. Its so worth the extra $100 even if anyone doesn't think so!

Note 8 will be awesome. Also PA is spreading on the rumors, how about some proof of this PA. "after all, it will have to eventually clash directly against a 5.8" OLED iPhone 8 with wraparound display come defoliation time this fall"

33. mikehunta727 unregistered

Its from the multiple leaked "sources" that the 5.8 inch iPhone will have it. Nothing wrong with what PA said, Note 8 will go directly against the 5.8 inch iPhone. Wont outsell the 5.8 inch iPhone but who cares

I believe the Note 8 will be one of Samsung best sellers in history all thanks to the world hype up the Note 7 explosion like Grand Theft Auto. The world will be looking forward and news media with the Note 8.
