Samsung might celebrate the Olympic games in Brazil with a special edition Galaxy S7

Samsung loves releasing its flagship smartphones in various editions as a mechanism for adressing specific niches (like those in need of bulky, rugged phones who buy the Active models) or as a straight-up promotional tool. For example, last year the company presented the rare and very impressive-looking Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Edition, famous for its striking red finish and for making a very rich Chinese customer pay a sky-high price for the privilege of owning one.

So far, so good, it seems Samsung is working on an Olympic edition of the Galaxy S7. SamMobile has obtained evidence hinting towards a device codenamed 'Hero2_Olympic_edition' that's under development at Sammy's. It's no secret that the Galaxy S6 was codenamed 'Hero', and the Galaxy S7 is a direct sequel of its with the Hero2 codename. So we're clearly onto something here, aren't we?

Besides, Samsung already has plans to celebrate the summer games in Brazil this year by turning them into virtual reality experiences, so a thematic smartphone seems more than appropriate for such a large sports event. In this regard, SamMobile's sources claim that two apps – code-named 'IOC_Olympic_app' and 'Rio2016_WOW_Olympic_app' – are under development. It's quite possible that the eventual Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition will come loaded with Olympics-themed VR content, and we assume Samsung will throw in a bundled Gear VR headset. The company already did that with pre-orders of the regular Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge earlier this year, so such a move certainly isn't out of the question.

Moreover, Samsung has something of a tradition honoring the Olympics with thematic handsets. Some of you may recall that the Galaxy Note 3 had an Olympic edition back in 2014, and the Galaxy S7 (or S7 edge, who knows) seems ripe for following in its path. The Note 3 Olympic Games Edition wasn't any different from the regular version, save for the special packaging which included tickets to skating sessions in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium, and a special flip cover. Add a free Gear VR to a bundle like that, and the Galaxy S7 Olympic Edition sounds like an offer of, ahem, Olympic proportions!
