If there is one thing you can say about Disney, it is that the company is self-aware. For example, it obviously knows that waiting in those long lines at DisneyWorld and Disneyland, under the hot summer sun in Orlando and Anaheim, is brutal. So the House of Mouse decided to turn that experience into something fun that guests at the parks can enjoy while waiting to go on Splash Mountain or It's a Small World.
Play Disney Parks is a free app that Disney says "will turn wait time into play time with all-new interactive experiences and activities." The app is designed to work with certain queues including:
- Playset Party at Toy Story Mania! in Disney California Adventure park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
- Off to Neverland at Peter Pan’s Flight at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom.
- Rocket Race at Space Mountain at Disneyland park and Magic Kingdom.
- Andy’s Boardgame Blast! at the new Slinky Dog Dash coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The app will add more new features over time beginning with next year's opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. This new Star Wars themed area will open at Disneyland Resort next summer (2019) and at Walt Disney World Resort in late fall 2019.
The app allows guests with a Disney account to win rewards for answering trivia questions, playing games, and experiencing certain attractions in the parks. In addition, from within the Play Disney Parks app, users can play curated streaming music playlists that are based on Disney characters, attractions and theme park lands. That feature requires the user to have a subscription to Apple Music. In addition, some features are available for iOS users only.
