Latest OnePlus 5/5T update is huge, adds new gesture, fixes some issues
OnePlus is rolling out another update to the OnePlus 5 and 5T smartphones and although it doesn't bring too many new features and improvements, you should prepare your devices for a sizable download.

According to OnePlus, the OxygenOS 5.1.2 update for the OnePlus 5 and 5T weighs in at 1.6GB because it's a full ROM update. The most important new feature is the addition of a new gesture that allows OnePlus 5/5T users to double-tap to lock the screen.

Also, the Gallery app now features Places, a map view of photos by location, as well as “Recently Added” collection. The May security patch is included as well along with the bug fixes listed below:

  • Fixed auto-rotation stability issue;
  • Fixed Wi-Fi connecting issue;
  • Fixed microphone not functioning issue for AKG earphones.
The update is delivered OTA (over the air), so you'll have to wait a few days if it's not available right away. However, since the roll-out begun over the weekend, chances are everyone got the notification.

Double-tap to lock screen is an incredibly useful gesture that requires deep OS support. Any application-level double-tap to lock screen results in requiring the PIN when unlocking next time. This is a stupid Google "security" issue, present since Android 7 if I'm not mistaken. Some launchers like Nova and Microsoft Launcher use a hack and do not actually lock the screen on double-tap but make it black and set the screen timeout to a low value like 5 seconds. However, this approach is also bad, because if you put it in a pocket or touch the screen immediately after you "lock" the screen, the phone will unlock immediately because it was not yet really locked.

i already complaint to OnePlus and the respond was, "if you do not like this phone, buy another brand, all of this are features" yes you know it is a glitch or bug but OP doesn't care.

Actually, OnePlus has it implemented correctly since this update, and it is also implemented correctly in OP6 !

That's weird. My 1+5T comes with HydrogenOS (Chinese version) and it's had the 'places' feature in the gallery since I bought it 6 months ago. :/

oh that's cool. I guess they test it on Hydrogen before implementing in Oxygen. I live in China as well, bought the 5t here but flashed Oxygen cause i didn't want the Chinese app store and crap that comes with it.

I was too scared to flash. Just deleted the Chinese apps and installed Google services instead :D

Since the last update of One Plus launcher, there is already the double tap to lock the screen. It works great and it is not just turning off the screen without locking it, it really locks it. Regarding places, it was already in the gallery app since day one with OxygenOS (bought my phone in France).

I'm sporting the OnePlus 5T with OxygenOS 5.1.1. And it already has the double tap to lock feature. I was hoping this update would bring improvements to the messaging app...

I believe it's on by default. Have you tried double tapping the home screen yet?
