Analysts: Sony sold 4.6 million units of the Sony Xperia Z in 40 days
What has helped push demand for the Sony Xperia Z is the decision made by Sony to start pushing this device early in the year. By the time CES came around, the Sony Xperia Z was the talk of Las Vegas with its water and dust proofing. The rear-facing camera uses the Exmor RS sensor and the device has a high quality look thanks to the decision to use glass in the build. The phone is available in white, black and purple and has been out in the marketplace since March.
Eventually, the Sony Xperia Z will run into the competition from the other high-end models. But at least for the last 40 days, it had most of the market to itself and performed admirably.

3rd for Smartphone, Super YES!!!
Congrats Sony, cant wait to buy the Z once the price comes down a bit!
Also still waiting for the 4.2 update, hoping it brings new things and more improvement
especially on the screen color and contrast and camera software.

I hope the upgrade comes with bravia engine turned on all the time, not only videos and pictures.. That would increase the screen color and contrast of the screen

soo many thumb down for a nice comment.
accoding to" Samsung used college students in the area and had them go online, pretending to be disgruntled HTC device owners"
i guess many phonearena users are supported by Samsung to under valuate other phones such as Sony or HtC phone.
good job jokers
sr for bad grammar

Look yourself first
What makes you think they are samsung fanboys?
Could they be nokia,htc,apple,lg fanboys?
You just mentioned some kind of people you dont like but actually you are the one of them in different brand name.
As long as i know, in PA there are less sammy fanboys than the others..thats for sure

Sony, my xperia S is still waiting for its 4.1 update. Just hope that the same treatment don't happen with the Z later on.
8. superstar (Posts: 30; Member since: 14 Apr 2013)
So true Sony never again, with Sony once a new model is out all the older ones no longer exist!
The xperia E will probably get Key Lime pie before the Z as the J did before the S, non-existent updates!
34. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
Exactly bro! Stupid sony. And its sad that the lowr end xperia models like J are gettin it before S!!! My next phone will NOT be a Sony for sure if things continue like tis

Nice, copying someone else's comment from another site...
59. superstar (Posts: 30; Member since: 14 Apr 2013)
More like nice I used the comment on two site presumably your taking about xperia blog...?

33. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
Sony is the supposedly the best and the pioneers in the camera technology and still my xperia S has one f the worst camera I have seen around. :(
46. roobs (Posts: 41; Member since: 18 Mar 2013)
it has a good camera but sony uses high compression which makes the photo look quite bad :P
55. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
so u are saying, the issue is with the software? I thought the sensor is f**ked up
60. roobs (Posts: 41; Member since: 18 Mar 2013)
exactly, try some custom roms, the image is way better there..
6. Andrewtst (Posts: 251; Member since: 25 Jan 2009)
Sony Xperia Z is my 1st Sony Android smartphone! :D I just too love it even though it was not pack with latest CPU and not having the greatest viewing angle panel.
But it was damn solid, smooth and stable. The screen was actually well nice also even the viewing angle not good.
9. superstar (Posts: 30; Member since: 14 Apr 2013)
When you realize how slow the updates are it will be your first and last as I did!
20. emadshiny (Posts: 1086; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
don't judge soon
android 4.1.2 is the latest version right now and there is no device with 4.2.2 in the market. even htc One which will be released in a week has the same version. i think they will upgrade it by the time S4 is in the market with its latest android version.
but i agree they didn't perform well regarding XS
22. superstar (Posts: 30; Member since: 14 Apr 2013)
Nice to know your happy to wait an eternity for updates but when the the gs3 which was released at a similar time to the S and got Jelly Bean it in October, the gs2 which was released two years ago got it in March and all of Moterola and HTC's flagships have got by know It's not that hard to understand why I won't buy another Sony and why I recommend to others not. How likely is it that this will happen again?
All they are doing is ensuring few go from the s to another sony device. As said before first and last!
23. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
as far as I remember, there are alot of features and changes happen when a 2.3 upgrade to 4.0. means
more improvement will be involve for 4.2
so just wait or you can go with S4 the mighty plastic
11. WakaFlakaD (Posts: 352; Member since: 30 Apr 2011)
Less viewing angle means more privacy, so it's a personal choice on that.
35. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
hw did u find the camera? Are their those violet grains wheneva u take an indoor shot or even in moderate lightings?
7. sam_tek (Posts: 62; Member since: 18 Feb 2011)
Another day, another analyst, another stat.
Still, I hope the news is true.
13. TheBitterTruth (unregistered)
Thats great! only they need is to improve their battery life :)
Well I will go for either HTC One or S4.
15. TheBitterTruth (unregistered)
*for now only.
I hope the Sony Cyber shot will ruin all others.
16. emadshiny (Posts: 1086; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
the battery life is very good
mine lasts for more than 40 hours of average use in most of occasions.
14. emadshiny (Posts: 1086; Member since: 05 Dec 2012)
fanboys are attacking this page just because they can't see Sony is rising.
this is just the beginning. wait for more, you haters.
17. wendygarett (unregistered)
Sony always make an overpriced obsolete phone, hence a bad reputation for them
24. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
hahaha!! looks like your the only poor here
53. TheBitterTruth (unregistered)
atleast they dont make ugly cartoonish phones
18. lallolu (Posts: 210; Member since: 18 Sep 2012)
This is the power of being quick to release a device, instead of doing it after others or announcing it and releasing 6 months later. I believe sony should be happy with their sales on this. It will reduce though when HTC one and Galaxy S4 comes, except if they come with flaws.
21. Abiyouth (Posts: 3; Member since: 02 Apr 2013)
I am using my xperia v now and I am sure this is my last.sony mobile.! Time to get s4
25. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
once S4 get wet accidentally and sent to customer service you are now back with Xperia V
38. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
I dont think unless u are living underwater or u are Micheal Phelp, the water proofing matters that much. Yes , it is a welcome feature, but I am sure many f us already take utmost care while using our smartphones and customer experience will rank higher than water proofing.
44. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
its not about living underwater, its about a smartphone that join you wherever you go, with no worries that it would break down in middle of your enjoyment. XZ maybe suck inside but this phone wont sell those millions if it isnt for its water/dust proof & a stunner design.
One thing, millions of people attract to a well known features than a features that wont use everyday :)
57. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
Hmm... Maybe u are right. But for me, I ll never buy a phone just because it is water/dust proof. Yes I love the design, but I am so dissapointed with my Xperia S right now and the reviews about the camera quality for this phone isnt too inspiring either. And the updates are soooooo damn f**kin slow. Thats not how a company should treat its flagship phones
26. boosook (Posts: 771; Member since: 19 Nov 2012)
4.6 million users that will never see Android 5 on their flagship. ;-)
27. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
will 100M user or the 700K preorder can survive to witness the android 5.0
or theyre dead once it arrive. :)
30. FlushGordon (unregistered)
My 720p knock off China phone is still better than the Xperia Z's dated 1080p LCD ... and I am not kidding
31. mydi.maus (unregistered)
32. Esf_Kid (Posts: 43; Member since: 28 Feb 2013)
thats a great amount for the beginning of the year
i think it will become even better when Sony's H2 flagships arrive.
41. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
but by that time there will be other flagships like S4 and maybe Note4, Nexus5. I think it ll be tough for SOny
45. pyradark (Posts: 710; Member since: 10 Jun 2012)
nothing is tough for sony, theyre the only company who battle it out with quad core phone last year, and still they rank 3rd on smartphone.
things are changing, its not all about sammy now
56. jinxed (Posts: 107; Member since: 10 Jan 2013)
ya right! it ll be a cakewalk for them.. they ll be easily beating out Nexus5 and Note4 and s4 right ?
Im sorry but I beg to disagree with u bro! U cant look down on the competition. Yes they are in the top 5 manufactures and Xperia Z is good, but look at the competition. A lot of people love samsung, and when Nexus4 came out so cheap last year, there will be a lot of people who will be looking forward to the release of the next Nexus.
39. colouroflife (Posts: 1; Member since: 16 Apr 2013)
Sounds like a decent , even stellar start for Sony Xperia Z and a well deserved one.
43. xperiaDROID (Posts: 4821; Member since: 08 Mar 2013)
Keep it up, Sony!
I'm proud to own a Xperia Z!
Sony always make me believe!
49. madpiyal (Posts: 108; Member since: 11 Feb 2013)
it was the perfect launch timing of Xperia Z that made this success possible. I want Sony to be a dominant player in the smartphone segment because HTC is dying, both Blackberry and Motorola is almost dead, Nokia even with great innovations not making a dent. All this makes a bad time for consumer like us to have limited choice. If Sony release their Xperia SP and L quickly both of them will be best seller like Xperia Z because of their perfect launch time.
50. anu14358 (Posts: 1; Member since: 16 Apr 2013)
This is nicer report for Sony..
I really like this phone..it's amazing
display and camera..I already got
Sony Z... Tested it underwater and im
51. AshishRomea (Posts: 145; Member since: 09 Aug 2012)
great start for sony , we can expect 15-20m Z to ship by the end of the year , which will be a great start and we can await the Xperia ZII
54. Roeshak (Posts: 10; Member since: 17 Apr 2013)
It just shows how limited the influence the tech sites have over consumers. Phonearenna, this one's for you. Ray and Daniel.. watch this space as far as Sony is concerned this year.
All this talk of they only did this because there was no competition is just sour grapes.
What? the iPhone 5 isn't competition?
The very affordable nexus 4 isn't competition
The 2012 flagships are also still in play with much much reduced prices.
When you also consider the fact that Sony isn't a real player in America, you realize in truth just how impressive these figures are.
And why not? the xperia Z is an amazing smartphone that's had a lot of half truths and in many instances bare faced lies told about it.
It's flaws were greatly exagerated by the techys while it's positives under played.
It's got an amazing display which handles videos and games much better than the HTC one but it's display has been roundy criticized for because of viewing angles. It's like Ray was asking us to choose display because you could see it's inferiority from all angles. The simple truth is the clarity and detail of the Z's display is unmatched and phones4u called it exactly right. The HTC One's display is just another over saturated display. Ok you get a colourful ui but that's where it's stops. Video playback is average and gaming graphics are nothing to write home about despite the very high reslution.
I'm very happy I dodged the One, an insanely over hyped phone and going by these figures so have many other people too. For me anyone who buys the One who isn't a die hard htc fan will quickly realize that they've been a victim of hype and nothing more.
Best phone on the market? Give me a break. If that were true, most of these 4.6 million customers would have waited a few weeks to buy this supposedly incredible device. It's been known about now since the 19th of Feb afterall. The idea that the HTC one will make this sort of impression in the market place is a fantasy that exists only in the heads of HTC loyalists and some tech sites who have a vested interest in promoting HTC.
If HTC sell 4.6 million Ones in 120 days they should coun't themselves very lucky. 4.6 MILLION IN 40? tThat's just a pie dream as far as HTC is concerned.
58. Roeshak (Posts: 10; Member since: 17 Apr 2013)
You should never take what the reviews say as the gospel truth. Most of them have their preferences and Sony doesn't make phones for techies so you'll never see them raving about a Sony phone. It doesn't mean the device is bad, it's just not a geeks phone or one for the look my phone got bigger numbers than yours crowd.
The camera is awesome. Beats up the iPhone 5 easily and is also better than that on the HTC. Anyone who tells you anything is a biased liar.
