Verizon explains why customers suffered from a regional outage today

A regional issue prevented some Verizon subscribers from connecting to the carrier's network this morning and afternoon.

If you tried to call a friend or family member earlier today, but were unable to connect to their phone, chances are that the person you tried to call is a Verizon customer. This is not a mentalist trick, it just so happens that Verizon's service went down on Tuesday morning starting at 8:32 AM.

Complaints from Verizon subscribers started showing up on Downdetector at 8:32 AM

At 10:17 am EDT, the Downdetector website noted that it had received a peak 1,067 submissions about a problem from customers of the carrier. That was up from the 66 reports the site had received at 8:17 AM EDT. Fifteen minutes later, 432 submissions from Verizon customers were received, and that figure kept rising until 10:17 AM EDT.

The number of complaints received by Downdetector showed that there was a regional outage, but it was not enough to signify that Verizon was suffering from a major issue. When the carrier went down for nearly all day coast-to-coast back in January, the number of complaints received by Downdetector amounted to more than 177,000.

The majority of those affected had issues with their mobile phones

54% of the complaints submitted by Verizon subscribers were sent due to issues they were having with the Verizon network and their mobile phones. 16% were unable to access the mobile internet and 15% were unable to connect to their 5G home internet.

Verizon customers in the northeast U.S. seemed to feel the problem the most. One person in Pittsburgh, who says that he relies on his Verizon service and his phone for business, health and emergency family issues all day long, posted on Downdetector asking what he is supposed to do "when calls are dropped, unresponsive, and plain not working." He ended his post by pleading with Verizon to fix the problem quickly.

His iPhone is in SOS mode, which means the handset is not connected to a cellular network and the only calls he can make are to 911 to report an emergency.

The locations with the most complaints included:

  • Pittsburgh
  • New York City
  • Erie
  • Columbus
  • Brooklyn
  • Philadelphia
  • Ashburn
  • Altoona
  • Youngstown

Verizon did issue a statement later in the day revealing that fiber cuts affected wireless service for some customers in Western Pennsylvania. The fiber was repaired and the carrier said that service was restored. All's well that ends well.
