Two paths: Which new Galaxy Z Fold is actually right for you?

The Aspect Ratio Shift: Passport vs. Candybar

The biggest fundamental difference between these two devices isn't just the price tag — it’s how they feel in your hand.

Galaxy Z Fold 8

With the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (The Passport), Samsung took a page from modern usability studies and dramatically altered the proportions.

Folded, the 5.5-inch cover screen adopts a wide 10:16 aspect ratio. It’s shorter and squatter, making thumb-typing effortless and allowing you to reach the top edge without hand-gymnastics. It also helps that it’s the lightest Samsung foldable thus far (201 g)!

Unfolded, the 7.6-inch display opens into a 4:3 aspect ratio — the golden standard for reading documents, browsing text-dense web pages, and viewing standard photos.

It will display more content when you play FPS games, and it will have less letterboxing when enjoying videos and movies. Flip it sideways, and you get a tall view to go through long articles.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (The Traditionalist) sticks closer to the classic, taller footprint with a 6.5-inch cover screen and an expansive 8.0-inch internal display.

As previously mentioned, that cover screen now has a 21:9 aspect ratio, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the thinnest foldable Samsung has ever made.

In other words, using it folded barely registers as anything different from a chocobar phone.



When you open it up, you get the classic square-shaped display. It naturally splits into two halves to be running two Android apps in their intended aspect ratio side-by-side. If it isn’t enough, you can split it three-way, or have apps in floating windows on top.

The screen excellence

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra have Samsung Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels inside and out. All of them having 120 Hz refresh rates and being capable of 3,000 nits peak brightness.

Whichever one you choose, you will not be sacrificing visual fidelity.

They are also both constructed with Samsung’s new Flex Titanium hinge — a construction that employs a titanium alloy film supported by a titanium frame. This makes the whole mechanism thinner and lighter, and completely removes the crease down the middle of the main screens.



One meaningful upgrade the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra have is an anti-glare treatment on their main screen panel. It’s great to see Samsung bring its anti-reflection know-how from the Galaxy S Ultra series to the foldables, for sure!

The missing camera: a big compromise?

It is worth noting that the wide Galaxy Z Fold 8 drops one of the cameras — it lacks the telephoto zoom lens.


For the standard Z Fold 8, Samsung opted for a dual-camera setup (50 MP Wide + 50 MP Ultrawide). While 2x in-sensor cropping on the main camera is there to handle your needs for portrait shots and some slight zooming.

Of course, this is what helps shave off some of the weight and thickness, which makes the Z Fold 8 the little passport-shaped booklet that you can barely feel in your pocket.



The Z Fold 8 Ultra, on the other hand, makes zero sacrifices. It packs a flagship 200 MP sensor, a dedicated 3x optical zoom lens, and advanced video capture options like 8K recording in the APV professional codec, and Cine LUT mode in the pro camera.

Basically, it’s as close as you can get to the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s camera excellence, but on a foldable phone.

Matchmaking: Which One Should You Buy?

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 if:

• You prioritize everyday ergonomics over extreme specs: A wide screen screen that puts everything into reach, and a build so light that you won’t register it’s supposed to have a complex mechanical hinge inside.
• You are a reader, writer, multimedia enjoyer: The 4:3 inner ratio is a joy for e-books, emails, PDFs, web browsing, but also gaming on a wider template and binge-watching your favorite series.
• You rarely shoot past 2x zoom: If your camera roll consists mostly of family photos, pets, landscapes, and social media clips, the dual 50MP cameras will be perfectly fine, and image quality will still be breathtaking.

The Verdict: The Z Fold 8 is the "everyday consumer" foldable. It trades high-end camera hardware for an ultra-lightweight chassis and a far more practical, user-friendly aspect ratio.

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra if:

• You want an uncompromising flagship experience: You aren't willing to step down in camera performance compared to top-tier slab phones like the S26 Ultra.
• You need to fill that screen real estate with apps: Android is pretty good at automatically scaling apps for any aspect ratio, but it’s still better to have them open in their native 21:9, which is what split-screen on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is built for.
• You rely on optical zoom and pro video features: The inclusion of a 200MP main camera and 3x optical telephoto lens makes this a true camera-first foldable in Samsung's lineup.
