The list of Xiaomi smartphones that have reached their EOL (end-of-life) date has just been expanded. It now includes half a dozen fresh models that will be supported by their maker no more.

These aren't just Xiaomi phones, but Redmi devices, too.

Some popular models

In the newly updated list we can find several well-known devices like:

  • Xiaomi 12S Pro
  • Xiaomi 12 Lite
  • Redmi Pad SE
  • Redmi Note 12R
  • Redmi 12R
  • Redmi 12 5G

It's not just smartphones like the Xiaomi 12 Lite from 2022, but also tablets like the Redmi Pad SE.

How many years of support do you need for your phone?

What does this mean?

When a device reaches its end-of-life date it doesn't mean it stops working all of a sudden. Quite the contrary, your phone or tablet just stops receiving software and security updates. In this case, it means that if your phone (or tablet) is one of the aforementioned, it'll stop getting HyperOS and security updates.

Keep in mind that should Xiaomi find a severe security breach or vulnerability, it can seed a special fix, even if your device has reached its EOL date.

Apple does it, too

We can't expect manufacturers to support our devices forever and ever; the hardware itself gets too old to support newer software features and standards, too.

We told you recently that Apple, for example, won't release iOS 27 for a whole bunch of its devices like the 8th generation iPad‌ from 2020.

How many years of support should I expect?

Google and Samsung are now among the manufacturers offering up to seven years of software and security support for their popular devices. That's a pretty impressive commitment, especially compared with the shorter support windows we've been used to for most Android phones in the not-so-distant past.

But there's a difference between a phone being supported for seven years and someone actually using it for seven years. In reality, relatively few people keep the same smartphone for that long. The battery is usually the first major problem, with capacity and endurance gradually falling off after years of charging cycles.

And even if you replace the battery, the hardware itself doesn't magically stay young. A processor from seven years ago may still be perfectly usable, but newer chips, cameras, displays and connectivity standards can make an older phone feel increasingly dated. Storage, RAM and other hardware limitations can also become more noticeable as apps and operating systems get more demanding.
