T-Mobile has laid off the highest number of employees this year since its acquisition of Sprint in 2020. As Sean McGrath, owner and headhunter at TMG Executive Search, notes, T-Mobile's headcount was inflated over the past year following its purchase of UScellular, Lumos, Metronet, and US Internet. Before that, it scooped up Mint Mobile. The layoffs were largely about eliminating duplicate roles.
Of course, a firing spree still sounds like a backtrack from parent company Deutsche Telekom's 2018 promise to "employ more staff than the two previous companies put together."
With T-Mobile simultaneously encouraging a self-service model, critics were quick to accuse T-Life of devouring jobs. However, MTN Consulting's analyst Matt Walker countered that narrative, highlighting that the headcount has been declining by 2% a year for years due to automation. That's why it's a little too early to blame AI or T-Life.

We recently polled our readers on what they would do if T-Mobile went all-in on T-Life. While 50% of the 3,829 respondents said they would switch, 33% were on board, and only 17% flat-out refused to use it.
While we always value our readers' feedback, we decided to broaden our sample size. We turned to Reddit and found that most users on the T-Mobile subreddit are fine with T-Life.

While many T-Mobile customers revolted when the company made the app mandatory for most account management tasks, most have settled in by now. It helps that the app has steadily improved since its rollout. Few customers contact support often enough to be outraged by fewer employees working on the floor.
I don’t love T-Life, but based on other threads T-Mobile isn’t the only carrier moving to AI.

Also working in T-Mobile's favor is its network performance, vast coverage, and T-Mobile Tuesdays gifts.
I don't communicate with companies frequently enough to care - I primarily use self-service & the website.

Besides, as some subscribers pointed out, AT&T and Verizon have also shifted to AI-powered support, so it wouldn't make sense to ditch T-Mobile only to end up with bots at another carrier.
For a lot of customers, T-Mobile pushing a self-service model means they don't have to talk to real people, which they really appreciate.
The less I have to talk to humans to accomplish simple tasks, the better.

Of course, there are still some customers who have left T-Mobile due to forced T-Life use, while a few are only sticking around until their devices are paid off.
The reason they are pushing it so hard has nothing to do with the consumer, it is because it tracks everything you do on your phone.
T-Mobile says the app has helped double its digital order volume, suggesting the bet has begun to pay off.
