OnePlus 15 will be remembered as the swan song of OnePlus for its fans in the US and Europe, but the phone will continue to receive software updates. While the OnePlus 16 won’t launch outside of China, its predecessor is getting a whole new operating system, which some users can already try out.

ColorOS 17 Open Beta is now available for some OnePlus 15 devices

Some OnePlus 15 owners can now voluntarily switch away from Oxygen OS to ColorOS on their devices. OnePlus opened applications for the open beta of ColorOS 17, which is currently only available for users in India.

The news comes alongside the official announcement from Oppo that the international version of the Android 17-based ColorOS 17 will be unveiled on October 13. The software will offer design changes and what the Chinese company calls “more natural system experience.”

Is Android 17 available on the OnePlus 15?

Eventually, the ColorOS 17 update should be available for all OnePlus 15 devices, but right now only users in India can enroll in the beta program. This is available for devices running on specific software versions, and there’s no information when the stable release may be available. Information about a US release is also missing, but it’s unlikely for OnePlus to have an open beta stateside.

The company warns that the ColorOS 17 beta is an early build and some features are either missing on not working as intended. Installing the beta could make you face instability, lag, overheating, battery drain, and app compatibility issues.

Why is OnePlus switching from OxygenOS to ColorOS?

When OnePlus announced its exit from markets like the United States and Canada, the company said it has “an operational adjustment” to its software strategy. With the release of ColorOS 17, owners of OnePlus devices that should receive software upgrades will have the option to voluntarily update to it.

If you would rather not switch from OxygenOS, you can still use it as OnePlus promised it’ll provide “version maintenance support” for it. The company also said users will have the option to roll back to OxygenOS after updating to ColorOS.

Some OnePlus 15 users online weren't very excited about the change of interface that's coming to their devices. However, several redditors pointed out that OxygenOS and ColorOS are already very similar to each other.

It’s probably for the better

I think the switch to ColorOS should be reassuring for owners of OnePlus phones. As sad as OnePlus’ exit from Western markets is, chances are that Oppo will invest more into its version of Android, securing a better future than OxygenOS could provide.
