For years, Samsung was firmly relying on Qualcomm’s chips for its foldables phones, likely in an attempt to make them more attractive to customers. That started changing with the Exynos chips inside the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, and the change may continue this year.

Galaxy Z Flip 8 may come with a mixed processor strategy

Samsung may launch two versions of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 later this year. One of those could feature the latest Snapdragon processor, while the other may rely on an Exynos chip, according to a recent leak from Erencan Yılmaz on Twitter.

The information was revealed from the official Samsung source code, and it could mean that Samsung will utilize a split strategy for its flip foldable. However, it could also mean that the company is still exploring both options before it makes its decision.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 may stick to a Snapdragon processor

As for the book-style foldables, Samsung may continue using Qualcomm chips. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide may use the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 “for Galaxy.”

That would align with the company’s previous strategy of offering the best possible performance on its most expensive foldables. In the case of the new “wide” foldable, the choice could be made to avoid any “first-gen” problems.

It’s a question confidence

Lately, Samsung has been demonstrating much more confidence in its own chips than in the last few years. That’s why launching an Exynos-powered version of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 won’t be much of a surprise.

Still, it would be difficult not to see a potential split-processor strategy as a step back for the company. The Z Flip 7 launched with the Exynos 2500 worldwide, and besides the lower benchmark scores, in our review it ran buttery smooth in everyday tasks.

Don’t celebrate yet

It makes sense for Samsung to continue testing different options for its phones, but I think the company will stick to its own chips for the Z Flip 8. Considering the rising component prices, that could be a crucial cost-cutting measure, leading to a lower price, which is certainly more important for most consumers.
