If you were hoping for a better version of the iPhone Air, you may like some of Apple’s rumored plans. While the company won’t launch its second ultra thin flagship alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra, the device is expected next spring with two exciting upgrades.
iPhone Air 2 is coming in 2027 with massive camera and battery upgrades
Apple is already working on the iPhone Air 2 and it’s testing prototypes of the device. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the phone, which bears a V62 code name, will launch in the spring of 2027, probably alongside the vanilla iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e.
The company aims to make the second-generation Air significantly more appealing by adding a second rear camera, which will allow taking ultra wide-angle photos. The new device is also expected to have an improved battery life.

Minimal design changes

It is still unclear whether the battery life improvements will be the result of using a larger battery or efficiency gains. The latter appears more likely as the device is expected to stick to the same design used for the original iPhone Air.
The two rumored upgrades could address the two things that made many people skip the ultra thin phone and opt for a different iPhone 17 model last year. Users on Reddit who didn’t get an iPhone Air cite the single camera, the subpar speakers, and the battery as the reason not to.
However, practically everyone who says they’ve bought it appears very pleased with their decision. The impressions range from “best iPhone I have ever owned” to “my favorite iPhone of all time.”
That feels very similar to the experiences shared by my colleagues. In his in-depth review of the iPhone Air, Mariyan said it feels unique in the hand, while the battery life and performance are not as bad as feared. Then Victor went on to say that the iPhone Air has ruined most other phones for him, making him ditch the iPhone 17 Pro after just a day and return to the thin device.
No other competitors

Considering the reportedly abysmal sales of the iPhone Air, it’s surprising that Apple is investing in a sequel. On the other hand, even the Galaxy S25 Edge didn’t seem capable of competing with it, and the rest of the industry abandoned its own ideas for ultra thin phones.
That could open up an opportunity for bigger success for the iPhone Air 2, especially with the rumored upgrades.
One issue that won’t be solved
As much as I am tempted by the idea of the iPhone Air 2, I don’t think it’ll sell much better mostly because of the price. The original was already pushing the limits with its $999 price tag, and I can’t imagine the sort of upgrade that would excuse an even pricier device.
