There are two tech brands that have exited the smartphone industry that many consumers wish would come back. One is LG and the other is HTC. The latter is an interesting study as it created some of the most beloved smartphone models in history, including the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1, Nexus One, and the HTC DROID Incredible. HTC also manufactured my favorite smartphone of all time, the HTC One M8.
HTC is no longer the superstar it once was
But since then, HTC has found itself occasionally selling mid-range models, and even offered a pair of blockchain phones, the HTC Exodus 1 and HTC Exodus 1s in 2018 and 2019, respectively. It did have fleeting consumer success with the HTC Vive VR headsets, but even that bright star faded and the company now sells its headsets to enterprise customers.
The HTC VIVE Eagle smart glasses launched in Taiwan, where HTC is located, back in 2025 with voice-activated Gemini AI and OpenAI GPT voice assistants (HTC is speaking my language offering this feature). The glasses feature a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and offer real-time translation in 12 different dialects.
The HTC VIVE Eagle will let bystanders know when the glasses' cameras are being used
One of the complaints about Google Glass and the reason users were called Glassholes was because many bystanders were afraid of being secretly recorded or photographed. The HTC VIVE Eagle includes an LED indicator that lights up when the camera is in use, alerting people walking near a VIVE Eagle user that they could be getting photographed or recorded on video.
The glasses are a competitor to the Ray-Ban Meta, and weigh in at 49 grams while offering 4.5 hours of continuous music playback. Overall, the 235mAh battery delivers about 36 hours of battery life and will charge from 0% to 50% in 10 minutes. There are two sizes, medium and large, and the glasses are powered by the Snapdragon AR1 chip. The VIVE Eagle is equipped with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage.
While it does not use the Android XR platform, it will "sit" on the Wear OS platform. With the glasses, you can take voice-to-text notes, transcribe conversations, take photos to accompany the notes, and even distinguish between different speakers.
Pricing, colors, and additional specs of the HTC VIVE Eagle
Now, they are coming to the US as Amazon lists a September 1 launch. At $499, the VIVE Eagle is priced at $200 more than the entry-level Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Color options will be Glossy Coffee, Matte Black, Glossy Black, and Apricot, and it has IP54 dust and water protection. The former indicates that limited dust ingress will not hurt the glasses, which are also protected from water splashes in any direction, such as light rain, splashes, and accidental spills.
Earlier today, Amazon listed the glasses and was accepting pre-orders on its website. However, by Wednesday evening that listing had been taken down, and the pre-orders are not being accepted for now. It is also not clear whether Amazon will accept pre-orders that were made when the listing was up and active early on Wednesday.
