Gemini has now also helped Samsung and Apple get competent AI on their flagships. | Image by Google
For most of us, our introduction to modern AI was through OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In many circles, the name “ChatGPT” is synonymous with “AI” and it’s still the go-to choice for hundreds of millions of users.
However, Google has integrated its flagship AI model Gemini into Android exceptionally well, making it a lot more accessible than ChatGPT. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Gemini has become the default AI model for most Android users now.
Gemini on Android
Given that Android is made by Google, it didn’t take long for Google Assistant to get replaced by Gemini. Saying “Hey, Google” now brings up a much smarter assistant that is capable of a lot more.
The ability to trigger Gemini verbally and immediately is a big reason for its popularity. It can see your phone’s screen, if you allow it, and help you out with queries, explanations, translations, and more instantly.

Google is making Gemini on Android better by introducing a feature that, honestly speaking, should have been added a long time ago to get more people to use AI. In a poll, we asked you what your go-to AI assistant is on your Android device, and the results are staggeringly in favor of Gemini.
A whopping 83 percent of you said that Gemini was your go-to AI assistant on your Android phones and tablets. That is over 10 times more than ChatGPT, which got a little less than six percent of votes and came in third place.
The other AI assistants
In second place was Claude with a little over six percent of votes, barely ahead of ChatGPT. Microsoft’s Copilot, meanwhile, only got a smidge over one percent of the votes, clearly not a fan favorite for you all.
The remaining 3.6 percent of respondents said that they use some other AI assistant on their Android device. What about you?

I can see why it’s so popular
Gemini’s popularity on Android is very understandable because of the aforementioned ease of use and accessibility. Even then, I’m shocked that the poll was this heavily skewed in favor of Gemini, given how popular ChatGPT still is around the world.
I, personally, use ChatGPT for most tasks simply because I started with it first and because Gemini has given me hallucinated outputs a lot more frequently than GPT. However, the ease of accessing Gemini does mean that, for quick and simple tasks, I just mutter “Hey, Google” and get it over with.
Just like most of you apparently.
