Regardless of whether you’re rocking a recent flagship such as the iPhone 18 Pro Max, Galaxy S26 Ultra, or OnePlus 15, or an older smartphone, you’re likely excited to see it getting better. With longer software support turning into the norm, the quality of software updates is more important than ever, and it appears everyone wants one improvement more than anything.

Everyone wants their phone to be faster

Owners of the OnePlus 15 finally got the opportunity to try ColorOS 17 on their phones this week, which made us ask what you’d like to see changing on your phone the most. With the new update, OnePlus isn’t introducing just an Android 17 update, but a switch of the whole interface, with new features, design, and other improvements.

In our survey, about 52% of you said that what you’d like the most from such an update is performance upgrades. This is hardly a shocker, considering that a smooth user experience across different apps, games, and even the menus of a phone, is the reason everyone wants a flagship smartphone.

Apparently, most of you are tinkerers, as over 23% of you want more customization options the most. With both Android and iOS becoming ever more closed, it appears that most manufacturers should take a note from this. This is especially striking, considering that only 15% of you want a refreshed interface the most, despite brands being very focused on their designs.

There’s one thing almost nobody wants

The least popular potential change, chosen by only 10% of you, are more useful AI features. While artificial intelligence is a divisive technology, it’s also the key to more personalized features, at least for most brands. Apparently, users don’t agree with the manufacturers on this topic, and are largely unbothered by these updates.

Considering the results, it’s good that both Android 17 and iOS 27 launched with performance improvements, which could be felt by users even with older smartphones.

Performance is even more important today

I love buying new flagship smartphones, but with the constant price hikes, these purchases are becoming more difficult, so I’m sure I won’t be alone in sticking with my current phone a little longer. This makes high-quality software updates even more important, and I’m not surprised performance improvements are what everyone seems to want to get.
