Samsung could be planning a big change to its mobile software naming scheme. After calling the user interface of its Galaxy phones One UI for many years, the company might be swapping the name to Galaxy OS in the next big software update.
Bye bye, One UI. Hello, Galaxy OS

The hint about the upcoming change comes from X user Phonefuturist, who posted that Samsung is working on Galaxy OS. According to the leaker, the Korean giant is "doubling down on deeply integrated partnerships for the upcoming Galaxy OS."
The leaker also mentions paid third-party integrations, but there are no big names thrown into the mix at this point. However, there's something strange going on with this upcoming name change.
Just a revamp of One UI 10
Accoring to the leaker, Galaxy OS is still gonna be One UI underneath. | Image by X
Unsurprisingly, users started asking questions under the original post, and the most obvious one is tied to the Galaxy OS mention.
One user asked whether One UI is going to be revamped completely. The original poster replied that One UI 10 will definitely be a revamp, but the leaker's "sources" called it "Galaxy OS."
So, we're not simply looking at a rebranding, but an overhaul, even though it's apparently going to be based on One UI.
According to @phonefuturist, this change is planned for the Galaxy S28 series, to celebrate 10 years of One UI (or retire the name after ten years, you pick the angle).

The end of One UI for good?
One UI 9 is rapidly spreading to more and more Galaxy devices but is this its last hurrah? | Image by Samsung
This leak raises more questions than it answers. For starters, is Samsung retiring the One UI branding for good across all its devices?
That's not as far-fetched as one might imagine. Samsung is pushing its Galaxy AI hard, even though it's mostly based on Google's Gemini. If Samsung plans to bring in more third-party AI services and charge for them, a rebranding might be necessary to give things a fresh start and introduce these big changes.
On the other hand, One UI has been around for years, and people have grown accustomed to the name.
Take this leak with a grain of salt
The same user joked about the Galaxy OS on April 1. | Image by X
I'm not familiar with this particular leaker, so you should take this rumor with a healthy grain of salt. Some users also questioned phonefuturist's timeline in the comments below the original post.
What's even more suspicious is that @phonefuturist posted a joke on April 1, reporting the alleged launch of "Galaxy OS 1.1" with 40% faster animations and full kernel-level optimization, claiming that this new OS was supposedly coming to the S23, S24, S25, and S26 series.
One UI 10 will bring significant changes, according to Ice Universe. | Image by X
To make things even more complicated, famous tipster Ice Universe chimed in and posted that "One UI 10 will bring about significant changes, unprecedented in nature." The leaker cites independent sources. The timeline is also different, Ice Universe claims that One UI will launch with the Galaxy Fold 9 series and not the Galaxy S28, so there's also that.
Whether these unprecedented changes include a Galaxy OS rebranding, we still don't know.
My personal take
I like the consolidation under the Galaxy branding. | Image by Samsung
I prefer things to be simple and direct whenever possible. The idea of a Galaxy OS rebranding sounds good to me. I like the consolidation under the Galaxy moniker. It's a good and well-known name, and Samsung already has a similar moniker for its AI system — Galaxy AI.
One UI deviates from the scheme too much, and even though I'm used to it as much as the next person, I admit I prefer Galaxy OS.
What do you think about all this? Which name do you prefer, Galaxy OS, or the good old One UI?
