With only hours left before the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra, it may be a good moment to remember the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are also premiering tomorrow. Just like iOS 27 for the phones, the wearables will land with watchOS 27, and may have an exciting and unoriginal new feature.

Apple Watch may get a Readiness app

Alongside its new wearables, Apple may also launch a new “Readiness” app. According to Apple insider Mark Gurman, the company will launch the new app as a “variant” of the current Vitals app, available on the Apple Watch.

In his post on X, Gurman says the company’s idea is to better compete with the software from devices like the Whoop smart band and the Oura smart rings. Both companies, as well as smartwatch giant Garmin, offer an estimation of how ready for the day or working out is their user’s body.

Will the Apple Watch Readiness app be able to give good estimates?

Apple first introduced the Vitals app with watchOS 11 as a way for users to quickly check key overnight metrics. The app consolidates the average heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen levels, and sleep duration and sends out a warning when they’re out of the typical range.

Aside from this, Apple Watches also have a Training Load feature inside the Activity app. Also available inside the iOS Fitness app, the feature gives a simplistic measure of the the training load over the last 7 days, compared to the load over the last 28 days.

Both the Vitals app and the Training Load feature stray from giving an opinion about the current status of the user. Instead, they just compare recent measurements to the average, warning the user when something’s off. This is different from competing apps, give users opinions about their condition based on the data.

Naturally, the new feature wasn’t met with too much excitement from Apple Watch users on Reddit. While people seem to like the device, they pointed out it can’t compete with Garmin watches when it comes to fitness and running tracking. Of course, some people also questioned why a new app is even necessary.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 may have more storage

While neither the Apple Watch Series 12 nor the Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to come with any major design changes, they may be the first models with 128GB storage. Both models are also expected to feature a new set of sensors, which may improve their tracking capabilities.

On the software side, watchOS 27 is expected to have some nifty AI features and a major update to the tracking of strength workouts. Users may be able to store individual sets, reps, weight, equipment, body side, and duration for this type of workouts.

Another meaningless metric

Since Apple introduced Sleep Score on the Apple Watch, I had numerous days during which I was exhausted despite the score. If the Readiness Score is as reliable as this, I wouldn’t expect anyone to rely on it. Either way, I’ll think twice before even paying attention to it.
