This new iPhone Duo video shows why it could be the first iPhone great for reading

It all comes down to a screen shape Apple picked on purpose.

The iPhone Duo appears to have a new trick for anyone who reads PDFs on their phone, as a new leak shows its Quick Look viewer splitting a document into two side-by-side pages when the phone is held open like a book. That's a welcome touch for a phone going up against the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the rest of the best foldable phones.

Quick Look gets a two-page PDF layout on the iPhone Duo

Leaker pdfu posted a short video on X showing Quick Look, the built-in viewer that opens a PDF when you tap it in Files or Mail, laying out two pages next to each other while the Duo sits in its open book position. Apple hasn't said anything about it yet, but the layout lines up with what the company already showed developers, where a reading app puts a page on each side of the fold (you can see a breakdown of that guidance here).

Pre-orders for the $1,999 iPhone Duo open on October 16, and it hits stores on October 23.

Why the iPhone Duo's screen fits a PDF page so well

The Duo's 7.6-inch inner screen is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support arrives later this year, which puts it much closer to iPad mini territory than any iPhone before it.

The screen shape is the interesting part. Apple went with a 1.4:1 aspect ratio, which we described as a slightly longer 4:3 when the phone was announced, and this report points out the ratio was inspired by A4 paper.

A4 sheets are about 1:1.41, so when you split the Duo's screen down the middle, each half is almost exactly the shape of a printed page. In practice, that means a contract or a class handout can show up at full size on each side without zooming.

Rival foldables have a different setup. Our Galaxy Z Fold 8 review found a 7.6-inch, 4:3 inner screen, no S Pen support (Samsung's titanium build doesn't play well with a stylus) and no Flex Mode this year. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold has an 8-inch, nearly square 2,076 x 2,152 inner panel, which by my math would leave each half tall and narrow for a two-page layout.

So if you own either one, this news doesn't change your phone. Still, Samsung should be paying attention, since Apple is going after the document crowd with a page-shaped screen and a stylus, two things the Fold 8 doesn't offer right now.

Who gets the most out of a two-page PDF view

This one is mainly for students and anyone whose job runs on PDFs, like contracts, manuals and slide decks exported to PDF. If you've been weighing the Duo against an iPad mini for reading on the go, a two-page mode makes that choice a lot more interesting.

The iPhone Duo's small features could matter most

This isn't the flashiest iPhone Duo feature we've seen, but it's the kind of practical detail that makes a foldable worth its price for people who work on their phones.

I'm hoping the two-page view is there on day one in Books too, since that's where I'd personally spend the most time with it.
