One (M8) vs Xperia Z2: stereo speakers comparison

Let's face it - front-firing stereo speakers aren't among the most common smartphone features nowadays. However, we might be heading towards a future where considerably more phone manufacturers opt to include such a setup in their offerings. HTC showed other companies how it's done with the One (M7) last year, and as we can see this year, it looks like it's managed to get at least one company inspired - Sony. With its Xperia Z2, Sony has also chosen to throw a pair of front-facing speakers into the package, in order to make those media experiences a little bit more immersive.

With that, however, comes the inevitable comparison we have to make between the stereo speakers found on the HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z2. Which phone has the louder volume? Which phone sounds cleaner? These are the questions we'll aim to answer in the video we've produced for the purpose. Of course, we should keep in mind that overall sound quality is a rather subjective area, as listeners typically enjoy varying types of sound. However, when it comes to the harsh realities of phone speakers, we think we'll be able to reach a consensus in an easy manner. In short, as you'll see in the video, the One (M8) proves to have the louder and deeper-sounding speakers of the two, although the Xperia Z2 isn't so far behind, which is an impressive feat, considering the fact that it's also water-resistant. Watch our video to hear them for yourselves!

I Safely say the BLACKBERRY Q10 speaker is the only one that's close to the one M8 if not equal. The speaker is beyond superb. Even @loudest volume it plays without crackling or distortion. It's has a lot of bass for something so small. Q10 best all around smartphone. They world is to blind to recognize you.

I've never heard the M8 speakers, but I can just imagine how good they are since I'm already impressed by the Z2 speakers.

My gf has M8 and its speakers blew me away and completely blew the Z2 out of the water. I love the loudness and the clarity on the M8

Why is it to expensive to buy 4 highend phones for you or for others? It's just 6 weeks wages to buy 4 phones, not that I buyed them brand new, but from eBay. Credit card, buy know pay in few months time. I love phones more than you. I growed up with good phones from early 90s

I'd have to agree here. I am guilty of buying a lot of phones, though most of them are from Craigslist with only a few being bought at retail. I tend to hoard my money so I'd figure why not spend some of it.

Actually it is quite a pointless comparison ~ As M8 is not waterproof while Z2 is waterproof ~ The M8 sure have advantage on that ~

Yes, and that advantage means far better speaker performance. Which was the whole point of this test. Sony sacrificed a lot to make the phone waterproof. Sound performance is one of those things. If waterproofing is something you don't care about, but speaker quality is... Well, this comparison shows you what to pick.

Yes I agree... and it comes down to personal preference... but in my opinion waterproofing is a lot more practical than a phone speaker... most of the time my music and movies sound through an external speaker anyway (or headphones)... But I definitely enjoy browsing while taking a bath... or taking pictures in the pool...

Your statement is pointless

It may not be waterproof but it's also unofficially water resistant which is good to know.

I don't think there's much doubt about it. Front-facing speakers are the only acceptable kinds of speakers when it comes to smartphones. I wish more hardware manufacturers got the concept that backwards facing speakers are daft. I wouldn't care if it's a mono or stereo-speaker as long as it's facing the direction of the screen. And I fully agree with Ray. Having heard both of these in person, the HTC One M8 really is worlds ahead with their BoomSound. I wonder how HTC will keep improving on them when phones get thinner and thinner though. Speakers need a reverberation chamber to really come alive.

It would be great if the next Z will have better front speakers and better availability.

Other tests show that the Sony phone is louder but with poorer audio fidelity. The HTC is quieter but wins in richness and depth...IDK how to feel about this "test".

HTC One M8's speakers are louder than the one in Z2. You might be talking about the comparison between Z2 and M7

I heard something completely different.

M8 speakers are a bit better. Surprisingly, I have an ancient W995 that also has louder speakers than Z2, but it's not waterproof and Z2 speakers output higher bass than W995.

Is that first song from the "Human Centipede" soundtrack?

For me, I don't know if front or rear matters. Just turn the phone over? I would say the speaker quality is much more important. Both seem to win here! I would prefer the water resistance of the Z2 because the speakers get the most use when I am in the shower.

Winner M8. Hey, LG take note here, can you do that on you G flagship...... G3 have all the bell and whistle but it.

I know m8 have the best speakers in 2014, now g3 was launched claiming 1w and amp to 1.5w speaker. Just to compare how much watts these two phones have? I only saw lg talking about watts in sound.

It's hard to compare the quality if loudness is different. Why don't you turn down the M8 a little to the level of the Z2 and then compare the quality? :)
