Forget the Samsung Galaxy Fold, many U.S. consumers have just one foldable device on their mind and that is the yet to be announced Motorola RAZR (2019). That's due to the nostalgia factor. The original RAZR V3 sold 130 million units worldwide just before the smartphone revolution began. Motorola fueled the nostalgic yearning for a new RAZR as far back as 2016 when it released a video that recreated a high school hallway from back in the day. The clip reminded everyone of the pocketability of the device and even showed how selfies were snapped years before the term was coined.

Last month, a series of renders leaked showing the new RAZR and the interesting triangle shaped box that the device will apparently come in. Back in February, we showed you a video that featured a concept version of the RAZR (2019) created by Waqar Khan. According to Engadget, Motorola parent Lenovo showed a 33-second video of the new RAZR to the press at an official event this week. As it turned out, the clip showed the concept version of the phone that was created by Khan spinning, dancing, opening and closing in three different hues (red, blue and silver). Why would Lenovo show a video of a RAZR (2019) concept at an official press event? Because Khan's video resembles the illustrations used in patent filings made by Motorola and most likely has a strong resemblance to the real thing.

Keep in mind that the RAZR (2019) is not like the Galaxy Fold or even the Huawei Mate X in a few ways. While Samsung's foldable closes inward and Huawei's foldable closes outward, the RAZR opens and closes vertically like the original device. And unlike the early foldables that open into large 7.3-inch and 8-inch tablet-sized screens, the RAZR (2019) is expected to reveal a notched 6.2-inch display when opened. Motorola's foldable is more about having a small device in your pocket that opens to become a phone.

The Motorola RAZR (2019) will under cut the price of both the Galaxy Fold and Mate X

Speaking of specs, that 6.2-inch OLED screen is rumored to carry a resolution of 876 x 2142. The 22:9 aspect ratio makes the screen a bit taller and thinner than the cinematic friendly 21:9 displays found on the Motorola One Vision and on Sony's new line. While the Galaxy Fold and Mate X are powered by the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform and the Kirin 980 SoC respectively, Motorola is trying to keep costs down and will reportedly turn to the Snapdragon 710 chipset. We expect to see the device equipped with 64GB or 128GB of storage with 4GB/6GB of memory included. The rear-mounted fingerprint scanner is expected to feature the iconic Motorola batwings logo (similar to the One Vision), and there could be one or two cameras on the unit. The phone is believed to feature a 2730mAh battery; hopefully, it will support Motorola's Turbo charging capabilities. And surely Motorola will have the foldable pre-installed with Android 9 Pie.

The RAZR (2019) wouldn't be the RAZR without an external display, and while its size isn't known, it is believed to sport a 600 x 800 resolution for an aspect ratio of 4:3. The display will apparently show the time, date and weather along with notifications. It also could double as a trackpad and display up to six customizable Quick Settings icons at all times. The device is expected to undercut the $1,980 Galaxy Fold and $2,600 Mate X and carry a $1,500 price tag. The latest rumors have Motorola producing only 200,000 units of the RAZR (2019), and in the U.S. it could be a Verizon exclusive. We should see the Motorola RAZR released sometime this summer.
