Great news! After years and years of fighting contactless payment, Walmart is finally throwing the towel. The retailer is now rolling out standard Tap to Pay, supporting both Google Pay and Apple Pay, so you can say goodbye to the dreaded Walmart Pay app.

Walmart and Sam's Club locations in the US will begin deploying Tap to Pay starting August 25. The company announced the change on its corporate blog, saying that it's aimed at "making shopping feel simpler and more seamless from start to finish."
We want customers and members to have a choice in how they pay so they can check out in the way that works best for them. Now, beginning Aug. 24, we will be adding Tap to Pay to our payment options at select Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations, with plans to roll it out to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026 and to fuel stations by mid-2027

Tap to Pay allows an eligible card, phone, or wearable to be used at the point of sale. No need to pull out your wallet or credit card or open the Walmart Pay app.
If you're on Android, you can use Google Wallet once the feature hits your local Walmart store. Speaking of Walmart cards, the company will allow you to add Walmart, Sam’s Club, and OnePay cards to your digital wallet of choice.

Upgrading to contactless payment and support for digital wallets may sound like a decade-old conundrum, but Walmart has resisted the change for quite a while.
Clients had to use Walmart Pay, an app that relies on QR codes at the register. The company briefly supported CurrentC, a mobile-payment system that went bust a couple of years ago.
Of course, all alternative checkout methods such as cash, physical chip cards, Walmart Pay, and Sam’s Club Scan & Go will continue to work if anyone's nostalgic enough to use them.
