I was patiently waiting for Google's hyped AI Studio and even pre-ordered the app, but Google decided to pull the plug, Android Authority reports. This comes mere months after the company announced the mobile app for Android and iOS back in May.

It's official. Google posted on the official Google AI Studio X account that the company has decided to pull the plug on the app even though more than 800,000 people have pre-ordered it on Android and iOS.

But fret not, says Google. Instead of adding the app to the Google Graveyard, the company will bake some of AI Studio's functionality directly into Gemini.

What is (was) AI Studio?
AI Studio on mobile was supposed to bring most of the features of the desktop suite but focus on letting developers create apps on their mobile phones.
Many people already use AI Studio to vibe code apps, mix and sync them across different devices, or just test code, and Google wanted to give them the ability to do so on the fly, on their mobile phones.
However, the plans have changed, as Google is pushing hard to make Gemini its AI-everything hub.

Apparently, Google wants Gemini to be the sole entry point for everything AI on your mobile phone. The company says it's working closely with the Gemini app team to integrate the necessary feature into the AI agent.

Even though Google writes that teams are "working hard on bringing this to life," there's no date for an official launch of the said AI Studio features in Gemini, or even a timeframe.
So, if you pre-registered for the AI Studio mobile app, just like I did, you won't receive a mobile app. We all will have to wait for the Gemini update to start vibe coding on our phones.
Google putting all eggs in one basket?
It's hard to judge whether a standalone AI Studio app on mobile would've been better than just making Gemini do all the work.
In most cases, I prefer to have separate, specialized apps for serious work, but Google thinks it can pull this off using Gemini.
Of course, AI Studio on the web is still available, and coding on your phone is a major hassle, so the news is not that devastating. It would've been great to test this on a big-screen tablet with a keyboard and a stylus, but not this time.
